Aircooled VW South Africa

Picked her up today, so excited. Brakes are perfect. Towed her home and will get stuck in this weekend. Cannot wait to fire up the type4 motor.

Previous owner did not driver her for 2 years. Still licenced until April 2012. He started painting all the surface rust with rustop or something similar. Might not look like much now but he actually saved this bus by doing that. The garage it was standing in is on the virge of collapsing as we opened the doors half the roof fell down but luckily it was mostly no roof and only rust flakes.

Vehicle belonged to the Diplomatic Corps from new until 1984, when the previous owner purchased it from the organisation.

ALL documentation included in the buy, from first private registration and sale agreement from the Diplomatic Corps.

Will start scanning tomorrow night to post documents as well.

From a distance that looks like a nice base to start with for a restoration.

Interior is in very good condition though. I hope anyone with good advice will chip in and give it also workshop manual? anybody can help please post details. I am hoping to get this one running and bring it along to Logo Day (Less than 1 month resto? RattyResto at least...)

Started this morning, removed seats, 10 layers of old carpet, front seats, curtains and stretchwire it was fitted with and started cleaning out the cab.
Bumpers are off
Pressure cleaned the whole vehicle and removed the fugly homemade spare wheel rack on the front to discover the big VW logo intact. We have some leaks and holes from rust but luckily all easily fixable. She will be going into prepping and metalwork early next week to get her new 2k skin by laters the week following

3 weeks to get her on the road and painted ... guys please gold thumbs that all goes well with this PJ.

ALL over town to find an Idle Jet, (The kombi is running but not idling so lekke) everyone the same BS story no I will have to buy carbs they cannot get stock of the jets loose anymore boohoo I couldnt care less.

Got some carb cleaner, soaked the jet, blew it out with our compressor at work and voila, tested it on the battery the cutoff pin released. it now works again.

Got the oil pressure sender from Goldwagen.

Tonight I will fit all these and run carbcleaner through and will let you guys know what happened later.

Well its been a while,

I still did not get the motor running smoothely but she was idling. Decided to drive her over to the shop where she will get her new colours. Might have been a mistake doing this. First couple of km's went just swell then she started spitting and coughing. Charge light came on/off intermittently. Oil pressure was fine though right through the trip. She would'nt idle at all at the stops and she is very VERY low on power.

However since that day:

All the rust has been cut out. New metal welded in place, new window gutters all round all the windows. Existing rubbers were removed intact and will be re used. Roof gutters rebuilt.
I am happy to say not an .oz of fibreglass or cateloid into this build.

Metal work now finished. Filler primer on, and second flat in progress.

Nice going ! Do you have any close up pics of the new gutters, tell us more about this, were they rusted the whole way around the bus ? What did you use as replacements? Good luck with the rest of the project

I am not doing any of the metal work it is as Baysville Technical School. I have not been close to these since I dropped it off. These are some few photos John MMS'd me.

The gutters were badly rusted, after the sandblasting there was most nothing left of them nor the window frames,
as has been explained to me these and the gutters were made up from scratches of sheetmetal that were available?

The particular teacher who is in charge of our project is very gifted and he has restored two other cars for us before where the rust is yet to return. I have seen the finished product with the bumpers of our bus and they look gorgeous, i could not believe it is the same bumpers that we sent in with the bus.
