I took ownership of a 2004 model water pumper, had to change plates and thus have the new "holey" plates.
Question: Do l need to pop rivet them onto the car using the new SABS Approved plate backing which would require me to rivet them in place?

Anyone with an extract of the law, cos l can remember there is a year frm which one has to adhere from.

You can do it 3 ways..

1) Drill and pop plate strait on to body.

2) Bolt an new number plate holder which has the 4 holes pre drilled, and THEN pop the plate onto that.

3) Use your old plastic plate holder, ( the one that you clip the plate into) clip plat into it, drill the 4 holes through the corners, mount holder with bolts, pop plate to it.

Hope this helps.

Law states that number plate may not be able to be removed by hand and basic hand tools, ie, must use drill or grinder to remove.

AFAIK You are just banned from using 2 sided tape or the famous yellow plastic screws.

Ya, you can attached the number plate holder any which way you want provided it cannot be removed while the number plate is riveted in place.

All i can say is screw them who thought of this money making scam! hope they have holes drilled and rivets shoved up their A$$.

O and if your plates have holes then you have to rivet them...

I made a plan for the front number plate, no ways was i going to drill into my front clam. AND those stupid plates increase my water temp on track by 4 degrees or so by blocking air flow to the radiator  :rantswitch:

I thought the plates being riveted in place applied to vehicles FIRST REGISTERED after a certain year.
Eish, l will pop down to the number plate people and enquire and then will report back.

The concept is fine, what they are trying to do is stop the Car guard from stealing you number plate and selling it to a bank robber.

Problem is they did not think it through, as these guys buy plates strait from the plate maker, I have a Toyota running in East London with my number plate. And I have not lost one.......so where did he get it....?????????????

It's also to make it more difficult to get "freebies" on the new toll roads by quickly changing plates

It's also to make it more difficult for pissed students to steal cops number plates

The last time I had plates made, I inquired at the plate shop and the lady said that all cars need them. Of course she would say that! Then I told her that on the poster (in their shop) which has the gazetted law printed on it, it states that only cars registered after 2000 needs them. She then told me it was an old poster.

I have actually forgotten to check the government website to she exactly what the law states.

just rivet the plate (to nothing more than itself). From a distance it will look like its done right, how many cops will actually try to pull the plate off if it looks riveted?
