VW based kit cars - How many are there?

Post by Thumper »

While looking at the 'Ugliest car' thread, it occurred to me that there are some other examples of Beetle based kit cars that will fall in the 'Horrendous" category. And of course the better ones.

The Covin Porsche kit looked pretty good. In their promotional pics at least. There are Lamborghini Countach kits..not so good.

Then the MG TD copy, there was one in a James Bond Movie too, which i could live with..

Which did you like, and hate?

The Ventura
The L'Automobile Company started out in 1976 making fiberglass replicas of a 1931 Alfa Romeo sports car on a Volkswagen chassis. With this success, the company decided to built a "modern" car of its own design. The Ventura came out in 1978 and started selling in September of that year. It continued the theme of using a VW chassis and VW air-cooled engine. Two years later, Ventura exports began to the United States, Germany, and Argentina. Beginning in 1981, the Ventura came in two models, the SLE and the RS. The RS was basically the same car, but was equipped with a 1.6 liter water cooled engine (Brazilian VW Passat TS). The car was facelifted in 1984, and a convertible version was made available. Very few convertible Venturas were produced. Both the convertible and the coupe were available with 1.6 liter and 1.8 liter engine, with the 1.8 making 84 horsepower. The 1.6 liter engine was dropped after 1986. When equipped with the 1.8 liter engine, The Ventura was capable of a top speed of 185 kilometers per hour. In 1988, the car went through a major overhaul, almost changing the car completely. The new car was called the Ventura II. The Ventura II had a 2.0 liter engine and a more "classic" look. The new car was not successful. Very few Ventura II's were built, with and production ended that same year.

Saw this kit car - the 'Troika' - at Cars in the Park this year. Don't know anything about it, never seen another one. Looks like it is loosely based on the idea of a T-Top Trans Am?

Luckily none of you called the Puma A kit car yet I would have had to come and kill you.
The ventura was actually based on the SP2 and used a lot of sp2 parts such as windows, door parts dash parts etc the watercooled version was based on the factory SP3 project which used a passat engine
I dont have a photo hand but a kitcar called Bonito was one of the nicest

The Bonito has a distinct GT40 feel to it. Pine, the Puma cannot really be called a kit car...low volume model maybe

There is a Mercedes SS100 kit car, think its called a Gazelle, that i see often here in Cape Town.

One could put the Puma in the kit car league though, you can buy all the bits separately and assemble it yourself. But ultimately it is a production car.
