Homemade adaptorplates don't work

As many of you know, I recently did a conversion on my beetle. I fitted a 1800 golf engine using a homemade adaptorplate. After sorting out the clutch and starter issues, I thought it was fine. Until yesterday. Took the bug for a nice drive. Hammering it a bit to see what it can do. Because there is no dowelpins or a guide lip the motor sagged damaging the spigot shaft seal and pilot bearing. Lesson learned: Don't try this at home! Will be looking for a proper adaptor and flywheel.

Why dont you just add dowelpins and a guide lip onto the existing one.

Seems as if the motor wasn't supported properly with a brace

That's true. Did not think it was nessasary. Don't have one on the 1400 nissan conversion, but the adaptorplate has got a guide lip.

Nope. Will get an adaptorplate and flywheel from Gilo engineering.

I recon that's why they call it "school fee's " if u buy a properly made one it is expensive
but not as expensive as the school fee's
and if u have a problem with it the manufacturer usually has the answer
