2012 - the year of the Bays ?

Don't laugh
2010 and 2011 saw quite a few bay window busses and pick-ups change hands, and not all at give-away (ZAR) prices iether. Face it, if you want a split bus and IF you find one at a good price, then you are a lucky bugger.
All the splits that were lying on fields, parked on pavements down the side roads, and in back yards i.e the busses that were visible from passing motorists have all gone (restored, spares/donor busses, exported). The few that are popping out now and in future will probably be better condition busses i.e preserved under a roof, garage, afdak, out of sight and mind for all these years. And now that grannie, pops, etc. has passed on they are getting pushed out into the sunlight by family members, heirs and so on who perhaps don't have a clue. And lucky is the sod who happens to be walking passed or hears about this and that while quaffing a beer at the local bar one day after work .......
I'm serious, if you happen to have a heads up on a split bus and you are humming and hawing, and twiddling thumbs, you had better shake up and get the money together, because that bus ain't going to be there forever. Even if it is a wreck and on dear uncle's farm, get your mate and stuff together, hire your trailer, and go and get it.
And it seems to me that this started happening with the humble bays a few years back already, the Westys started dissappearing fast, then the early bay De Lux busses, now any early bay "lowlight" in fair nick gets the tongues wagging and causes a few heart palpatations
It's happening guys, just looking at Gumtree tonight shook me a bit, our bays window busses are going down that same road that the splits went nine to ten years ago.
If you own a "used" bay window bus thats languishing in the back yard, cover it up, push it into the garage, preserve it - or sell it to the guy that has been pestering you for it - don't let it rot away and end up in the scrap yard.
I went on a bus "mission" today in an area where I should have seen at least 1 bus lying in the driveways or back yards - I did'nt see even one driving on the road - the whole day !
Love them or hate them, apart from the fun you and the family can get out of a VW bus, they are increasing in value, especially good solid, original paint, unmolested examples.
On my trip to and from Plett in my split bus last year, so many people approached me and offered their ("the story" Fig and Mrs Fig's favourite) story and the most unlikely of characters who kindly informed me how much my bus was worth, and how they wished they had one or still had their old one.
From one extremely affected kombi nutter to another potential kombi nutter, er, owner - if you know of a bus and you can get it at a good price, don't hesitate too long, because if you lose that opportunity, you will kick yourself forever, and those opportunities are far and few these days !

Did you perhaps loose an opportunity on a bus Paul???

Its true what you say, but it’s a pity, I am not one looking for a bus with high monetary values but purely enjoy them for the love, memories and fun I get out of them, and being affordable was always a bonus. I have never paid more than R5 000 for any car (ok, plus spending a few extra rands) and had huge amounts of fun where as there are people dealing with them purely to make money out them (such as this R100 000 Worcester bus) and not actually having a passion for it. I believe passion, love and memories sits way higher than a monetary value to me. It’s purely the greed of South African’s for exporting these beautiful cars instead of treasuring them but that’s just my opinion and we don't live in such a world.

But definitely, if you come across a good deal, go for it, don’t hesitate before its too late. A plan can be made.

I’ve always thought the Baywindow was the car of the year. :hangloose:

unfortunately the value is driven by the demand Sean...and it is quite sad because it makes the buses so much more expensive... :(
but on the other hand it increases your investment whether you drive it daily or not ! :D
i will have a car of the year for sale at George btw. :D

Ha ha ha - Sean I have kicked myself a few times for taking too long to get my act together. And I have scored a few "lucks" for taking action straight away, and "reminding " some owners regularly that I would like to own their bus one day ........
I am with you as far as the fun, passion and memories go - all the way.
And by the way, the baywindow bus was my car of the year from std 4, along with the Valiant Safari station wagon and series 3 Land Rover  :hangloose:

Sorry, I was speaking generally there and didn’t mean to offend anybody that had a car for sale, it’s examples like the R100 000 Worcester Split that as you said has an owner just looking out there to see how much that bus is worth. He clearly has no passion for it.

My baywindow became a reality in std 4, and that's when I started work on it. 13 years later and I'm still loving it :hangloose: , and it will never ever be for sale as long as I am alive.

Same situation in Stellenbosch Drusky, the SAPS make use of a mobile crusher which destroys those impounded cars, they even crush their own vans and cars which have been decommissioned, they don't auction these vehicles off like they used to do in the past ............. It travels to all the (SAPS) pounds once or twice a year, a terrible frieking sight :(
I've made enquiries here to try and "obtain" bits and pieces off impounded busses, but it is impossible (here) - There are 2 Kombis my side awaiting this fate - a nice looking one was crushed about 2 years ago. Even speed boats, trailers, caravans, the works - iether crushed or cut up !
If it is a stolen and recovered vehicle, chassis plate tampered with, no one wanting to claim it - cheers and goodbye - into the crusher.
Apparently it is also VERY difficult to get your vehicle out of there once it ends up in the pound. I never start restoring a car unless I have had it for SAPS clearance, you can take your future project for clearance on a trailer, it must just have an engine. Imagine spending a few years working on a project, spending all that time and money, and then there is an "issue" at the SAPS clearance centre - and they say "sorry, you can't take it with you ................." It does happen - must be the worst feeling ........
