A pal came to me at dinner and told me about a new and improved (not sure how this works, it is either new or improved, but WTF, just go with the flow) engine tin from Volkspares which replaces the forget-me-nots.

Went to the site and breezed past the button which said Variant Type 3  and found this:

Any forum member out there that have used this, any feedback? I would like to give my pal advice. Forum advice is as good as any, probably better...

I must say that Volkspares has a very nice website and a very nice selection of stuff. I must make a point of visiting them when I'm up there, with my credit card...

That is indeed Type 3 tin. It's now commonly traded as "Super Tin".

There are mixed views as to whether it works or not.

It is fitted to my hard-working 1776, which is now, off the top of my head, about 12k km old.

I have done one or two longer trips with that engine.

A lot of my tin is aftermarket and doesn't fit all that great (still looking for OG :!: ), so perhaps someone else can give you better info' on its efficiency.

These,"Super Tins," replace the air deflectors on the bottom of the cylinders. They work by directing air around the whole cylinder instead of only the underside. I've used them on all my own engines since the early 70's so I know they work well.

Actually, it is listed under Type 1 engine tin, intended as a modification, but come to think of it, I think I saw it when I walked under my Notch when Jurgen had it on the lift... It is very vaguely familiar... Type 3s typically run hotter than Type 1s, so I wonder if it's better. I supposed T3 fans throw less air around than the T1 fan, maybe that's why.

My Variant Karmann Ghia  didn't have it on. It had the standard J-plates underneath and the normal forget-me-nots.

Thanks for that Ainokea. :D

Super Tin
Was originally a VW made addition for the hotter running T3 to replace the "forget me not"s and improve average temperature of the cylinder.

I have looked at the design of the T1 cooling system and still feel the it is superior. However, there are a few pieces of cooling tin that I have seen on some engines which are not in any manuals that I have seen, you cannot buy them and pretty much every T1 engine that has ever had the tin removed no longer has these tins (because they are a nightmare to refit). Since these tins are missing, the super tin will work better than the forget-me-not without the other plates.

I suspect these extra plates are not a massive loss in a T1, but for the T3 they were a necessity, so VW made a plan to ensure that something was installed.

This cooling tin was available on T3 from 70/71 the aftermarket china stuff fits no where as good as the original I have used this china stuff on 3 motors but to be sure they wouldn't be coming off and f-up the push rod tubes I had to drill some holes in a couple of places and thread wire around the sleeves as to prevent them coming off. If you don't do something similar the will come off, beware. I have a set of original T3 cool tin and they fit and hang on proper, no need to wire them down.
