Garage Magazine - Issue 4

Here’s the heads up we’ve been wanting to avoid:
Due to various ongoing issues and battles (all to do with advertising sales) Issue #4 is being placed on hold. The new mag has been all ready to print for a couple of weeks, but money talks & BS –*being hearing a lot of that* – walks. Won’t air our internal dirty laundry here, save to say we are not amused!!
Now if anyone out there is as hurt by all this as we are, why don’t you hit up your favourite alcohol, car product, energy drink, fashion, eyewear or assorted other vendor and tell them why you (and thousands more like you) want to carry on seeing Garage Magazine on the shelves.... - copy us in why dontcha?
And of course if you are a subscriber and are feeling jittery about the survival of the mag, then get in touch (we’ll be mailing y’all anyways) and we’ll return your hard earned shekel!! Just keep on buying it over (or under?) the counter when it’s out again okay?

Will definitely keep on buying your mag young man!
It has a certain sense of style to it? Where on earth did you find someone to give it this feel?

Hey Barry, can't we buy digital versions. Should cut your costs a bit.
Havent seen the mag on shelves in the stores round here perhaps we can buy some back issues that you may have lying around to generate a little bit of income.

Thanks for the replies guys!
Back issues are available Klaus. Mail us:
I am interested in where you are & what shops you've looked at. Getting the distribution mix right is a process and all the feedback helps in allocating quantities according to demand. This is handled by our distribution company and so there is a bit of a lag due to third party involvement. Only way to do it effectively though.
Anything to promote the mag is great, but the core issue really is advertising. We need people to step up and put their money where their mouth is. Unfortunately I have slipped up by not employing (or finding) decent ad sales staff....
We return to the drawing board!

Sorry to hear about this Barry. I, of all people, know how cut-throat the magazine industry is right now. Magazines at Media 24 have been closed in the past for absolutely no reason! Ad sales everywhere are down and almost all of the magazines are feeling it. In this day and age, targeting the correct target market is key. The magazine I work for is currently struggling slightly to get back it's circ' as readers from when it was first launched have now "moved on". Youngsters aren't necessarily into what the brand always represented and covered so we too have work to do to get readers interested again.
The scary thing with ad sales is that the agencies are also feeling the pinch and haven't the money to pay. It's a dreadful snow-ball effect as should they have the money, they want to see your circ' figures to know they're getting the coverage they want should they advertise with you. No big circ' means no ads which inevitably means no moola and no option to print bigger numbers to try and get your circ' back up again.
All the best with trying to sort it all out. Establishing where to distribute more magazines to is a brilliant start.
Keep us posted

thanks Gavin
I hear you on the general trend, not helped by a tendency to move away from print (although especially for our type of mag I think there are some legs in it yet)
Thing is our circ is relatively low (7000) but then our ad rates are too - under R7K for a full page. This does make it easier for smaller niche type guys to get exposure in a national mag with a fairly specific demographic...... just need someone to sell the concept (instead of giving freebies to people who really should be able to pay

)

Would luuurv to get some ad space in your mag to help out, sadly the booze industry and a car publication don't really work together, "social responsibility" and the sort.
So I will just have to buy the mag, or subscribe, my SnS sub just expired. Need summin new.
