4 wheel disc brakes

One of the first things I did when I got Petrus, was to fit disc brakes up front.
What a difference it made to stopping from speed on the highway.

Ever since then, I thought that it would be cool to have a Beetle with four wheel disc brakes.

So, when Petrus developed a problem that the left rear locked during emergency manouvers on the highway, I had my justification.

This week we fitted the rear disc kit:

I had to have special flexible hoses made to connect the original solid brake lines with the caliper, as the caliper is a floating unit and need some provision for movement.

I use the reverse wide five adapters, because I want to retain the rostyles for now. ( a set of custom 16"Superlites are on the cards for later)

With the adapters, the rear wheels are offset about 15mm to the outside, making for bit more attitude in the stance.

The master cylinder was replaced with a new split window bus unit (what a bitch to bleed - thanks Andrè for your perseverance)

The handbrake was a cinch to connect.

Initial road tests showed me face peeling braking, with no ducking or diving and a solid feeling brake pedal.

The only problem experienced was with the axle seal kits from goldwagen. The seal is rubbish and developed a leak off the bat. The seals were replaced with new units from Seal Centre and the problem was solved.

Fantastic! Great stuff man, really makes me think about a disc conversion on my project.
The appeal for safety over 'original' in this case is a winner for me.

A bit dof to answer your own question, but Calooker did mention a firm in PTA that manufactures the adaptors. After a bit of searching on the forum and web: viola
http://www.maugene.co.za/wheelAdapters.html

Hope this helps, Herman!
