VIN on Chassis

Howdy All!

After many a year, I took the plunge and 1 month ago bought my own Beetle, a '73.

Whilst being towed to it's new home, the rear tyre blew out and the driver over-corrected, smacking the traffic barrier and rolling my new baby onto her roof....not a panel was left untouched. ah, yeah, he was fine! (testament to their strength!)

Well, now the real work begins...first and foremost though, is whether the SA cars had the VIN stamped on their chassis?

I have looked at TheSamba and they state in front of rear linkage tunnel inspection cover....mine HAS the cut-out in the damping material, but no number?

Sorry if this has been dealt with elsewhere, but I can't find the link?!

As a newbie to the Volks family, your help would be appreciated!!

Hmmmm.......after more digging, seen post by Fig stating that most Beetles from '70 on don't have their VIN stamped.......

Sorry don't know much about Beetles - I'm sure some helpful comments will come rolling in .........

But congrats on the Beetle, and bummer on it rolling onto it's roof on day 1 :( Eish that is a pity - good luck with the restoration and don't forget the pics !

Sorry to hear about the rock & roll. The chassis number used to be under the back seat where the tunnel widens, but as far as I know they stopped stamping it on there from 73. There is only the plate that is on the left of the spare wheel. Check it out. :P
Welcome to the forum - where are you based? We may be able to scratch up a straight bit of tin for you. Good luck 8)
