2L golf motor in microbus

Post by Jaco Tbo »

Hi there.
Im thinking of putting a 2l golf motor in my 1980 microbus.
Anyone with n 2l in n kombi?
Id like to know how is the power like?
How is the accelaration from 80 or 100 for overtaking?
I got my kombi with the ford v6 engine, ive converted it to fuel inj, and the power is very nice, but i seldom use more then 1/4 throttle, so whats the use?
Recently got some problems with the adaptorplate and ringear, so i think its time to convert to something better.
Also thinking of the 2L td vw (abl) diesel motor, but gearing and cooling can be a issue.
Any reply would be apricated.

I have a 2E in the back of my Baywindow, and its EFI by Dictator, and the power is good, actually scary, since the handling of the old bus is not modern by any standard.

I've heard of a couple people that uses the 2.0 engines in their Synchro busses, its aparently much better that the 2.1i it came out with. And the enines are rather freely available from these engine importers, cheap to buy and cheap to maintain, and if tuned correctly it will even be a lot better on petrol than a 2l AC engine.

The 2L import motors is a very nics conversion with the std MP9 EFI on and good on fuel consumption

I am getting one in tomorrow to do a in line Rings B/e etc for the owner
I did the conversion last year but the import motor was a bit slack so now it is time to give it a once over as I have done one or 2 so I know how they should pull

You welcome to give me a call for some advice 082 600 8663 Pierre

Hi guys
Tanx for the replys
I've decided to go with the 2L golf motor got mine last week.
By now its installed, an it started up yesterday. Taking it for exh on monday.
The conversion is not to hard, only issue was to find a differant water pump pully, that can work witout the ac an pwr steering pump.
Will upload pics as soon as I can manage to get them smaller, to large to upload.
Anyone know of a 2L 16v in a kombi?

Anyone thinking of putting a 2L 8v golf motor in a kombi, it is the thing to do!!
The power impressed me and was way more than I expected.
My v6 was quite strong with the fuel injection, but I don't miss it n bit, this is a far better option.
It runs smooth an quiet, can take of in 2nd and corner in 3rd.
The conversion was a huge sucsess and only took 5 days of work.
I've been thinking of 16v head or supercharging, but after driving it I think its fine just the way is is.
Here is a couple of pics. Can add some more of the conversion self if anyone is interested.

Nicely done Jaco. :hangloose:

That looks like the 2.0 gearbox? I have the 3 rib 1600 box, and top speed is affected by the short 4th gear ratio, but my bus pulls like a steam train through all gears !

Looks neat, more pics please! Did you do the work yourself or did a "shop" do it? What adaptors and mods were required? Do you have the radiator up front or elsewhere? Tell all please :)
