6.6km/l?.......whoa, that's bad, I'm getting about 13 plus and I poke the living poo out of it most of the time.

When you put in the motor, did you do a complete service?
You're running TBO right? Who did the tune on it?
Were the CO's ever set up?

These engines are pretty basic and you can't really screw something up, unless they've been neglected service wise in a past life.

I get around 7.5 km/l in my bus, but I have a 1600 gearbox, so doing 120 kp/h makes the engine rev high.

If I cruise at around 100, it goes up to around 9. :hangloose:

The bus we got last week already has the 2.0 AGG golf motor in, adapter fitted to match Carb/Manifold.

It definitely needs tuning but we got 9.9km\l last week at 110km/h

Considering to swop for MP9 to get better/smoother power and consumption...

Flatfourfan, what setup do you have in order to achieve that kind of consumption?

^^^ all stock.

2.0 8v import motor, just did a full service, cam belt, tensioner, oil, new stock dizzy, stock ignition, stock injectors, stock everything. Starts first time, runs damn smooth and runs strong. Stock MP9 is more than enough for me.

Hi, well I can tell you that I have an 1800 Jetta engine in my camper and easily do 0 - 100 in 2 weeks. Extremely under powered. Spoke to vw mech friend of mine and he reckons the 2L would make a world of difference in the low revs. Not having a 2L and not really enthusiastic about all the paperwork relating to changing the engine, I'm just going to turbo the 1800. Good luck.

1800 engine being slow? something wrong with it then, the injection models are rated at 82 kw which is not far off the import motor figures.

Agree with flatfourfan
And.... Fixing a fault causing performance issues might even be quicker! ;-)

Well I guess the camper with all the extras (and trailer) are quite a bit heavier than the stock Kombi. And yes, it's a carb version. It runs OK on a flat but as soon as you mention anything relating to an incline, it just dips down. Maybe instead of the turbo just looking at the injection? We once.....well fortunately my son....pulled the boat from Pretoria to Bronkhorstbay. Needless to say it took him quite some time to get there. Bottom line, I have to do something as it is rather frustrating to start a weekend away suffering getting there. Any other suggestions maybe?

Hi Guys.
I started this thred back in 2012! cant believe how time is flying!
My bus is still running like a champ in 2015.
Its not a daily drive anymore, but dit sevral long distance trips and fishing trips, and even took it to south cost.
Still getting 9.5km/l avg and up to 11km/l if the wind is in my favour.
Onley had a problem with the fanbelt braking once, leaving me on th side of the road. (good idea to keep a spare one, or at least keep the size written down somwere).

I think a real area of improvement would be the gearbox, these old vw gearboxes are old technology and i believe not as efficient as modren ones. Not to mention the ratios. I think the engin has the potential to cruise 120 at +-3200rpm , this wil save a lot on fuel and noise.

Anyone done the subaru gearbox mod? Also heard of an audi 2.8 v6 gearbox turned upside down.
Any ideas?

We have done our MP9 swop, checkup on Dyno and get 8- 8.5km/l in town.
10 - 10.3km/l on open road.
Very happy

Hey dude.

I love my 2.0 conversion as well and I was still tweaking and tuning until about 2-3 months ago. Car runs nice and cool and I get about 12km/l if I behave, which isn't often. The ratios on the speedster aren't bad for short blasts and she likes to cruise at about 100kph. But I get that the weakpoint is the gearbox. Ideally I'd love to yank it out and go for something else and also IRS.

All about the money.......aint got time to work on it now, so when she comes out of storage maybe I'll consider it.

I put a 20 l 8 valve in my bus with a 20 bay box. I would like a taller 4th, is that possible. It is carb but feel fuel injection should be better, any views on that. Also radiator is in the rear
