Lets build a forum engine!!

Ok guys, not sure if this has ever been done before, or if it's even feasible, but i reckon its time to put all the heads together and build an engine that gets decided on this forum. I'm not sure if it could work in this format, but lets give it a go and you guys can tell me what you think!

We'll divide each aspect of the motor into it's components. i.e.Type, Valve train, heads, pistons, crank, ignition carburation and so on. Any member who wants to put forward a suggestion can do so. Once i have the suggestions, we'll vote on which would work best for the budget, type of driving etc. (And lets not forget, if engine changes, you'll have to put some thought into gearbox combination too) Considering i'll be footing the cash, you'll have to work within my budget guidelines (the banks going to love me for this  ) and of course i get to choose driving style etc. i'll put together what it is that i was hoping for! And yes, i'll build the engine that gets decided and pop it in the Speedster!! This wont be an overnight process (my wife might just shoot me when she sees the bills  ), but could get quite interesting considering everyone can have a say as to what goes in this puppy.

If you think this could be a good project for all, let me know. If not, I still hope to get advice when i do start building. I'll guage interest based on response. let the games (hopefully) begin.

and of course, if there's a massive difference of opinion between members, i have the right to choose. So if you want something in, best you motivate!!

OK, I will try to skyve off enough today to ask a few questions and get ideas.....

Lets begin ath the beginning.....
do you have the car?
What has been done to it? Suspension upgrades? If yes, what have you done?
Brakes, stock or discs? If stock, do you trust them 100% or do you need 50% more braking distance than your mother from the same speed???

Please realise that building a big engine starts long before you look into the engine bay...

Engine...
what kind of budget are you talking?? Seriously?
Just so you know, you will blow your budget by at least 50% at the end of the day!!!!
What kind of driving are you going to do? Drag, weekend street race, daily driver, Weekend cruiser (breakfast in Franschoek followed by a drive to Paarl to go wine tasting and then home after that)????
You cant have everything, but the more you spend, the closer you get....

OK, since it is a Forum.. and everything is VIRTUAL, (I suppose the budget as well) I'd say lets start with a Type 4 casing?

why build an 1800 when for next to nothing more you can use a 2litre foundation with 94mm pistons???

No replacement for displacement..........

ok, i'll start putting together an answer to Tony a bit later, and add a couple of other things into the mix. i'm starting to get the feeling i'll have to start talking nicely to FFF to land that type 4 he may be parting with. ;)

Why not a 1700 with a T4 turbo and Aftermarket Fuel injection Should be good for a reliable 120 Kw
Why 1700
Thickest std sleeves more meat in the head less sealing problems. Biggest bearings of any type four thus less strain on bearings Cheap pistons
66 x 91.3 oversquare will rev
Can be put together for about 13 grand

No offence to Watercool, mate. ;)

Europeans tune, Americans displace. Europeans win!

And if you properly tune displacement.....
I will smash your little 1600 anyday with a 2332

hhmmm...on the EFI turbo route... i already have access to most of a k-jetronic system off a GTI, distributor, injectors, ,throttle body, piping etc. All that needs to be added are a couple of goodies including controler. Enough to make a good dent. Also can lay my hands on TD05 Turbo(same used on the mitsubishi Canters), intercooler (which can be modded for air to water, which might be an option in the Speedster) ...and best of all, at no cost to me!!

..the Bosch D-Jetronic system, as fitted to the 2.1 wasserboxer (Microbus) engine is A LOT simpler to install. Add a Go-Tech EFI management system and you have a winner
