Good Mornin
Can anyone shed some light here - fitted a later model gearbox to my KG - but the old 1200 drums does not fit the new shaft splines -
I measured the outside diameter of the old and new shafts - both 30mm
both have 12 splines but there seems to be a slight difference on the spline profile
I even bought new drums - original VW - same problem

thanks
regards

AFAIK the splines are the same. Are you sure the splines on the axle are not damaged?

Also, 1200s have a shorter axle than 1600 boxes, which take a larger drum.

Can it not be that the brake shoes are stopping the drum going on? Then you just need to adjust the brake shoes down to allow the drum to slip on.

You may find that the shaft has worn its edge, sharper, and the new drum also has a un-cleaned edge.
Take a small file and clean up the leading edge on both the drum and the shaft, will find it will slip in.
