Both carburettors have had all their innards replaced – again – went to Carburettor services and got a PDSIT gasket set. When I took the right off and measured the float levels and pump jet they were both way off, not sure how I did this the first time, 18mm and 2.5cc respectively. Put them to 13.5 and 0.5cc after replacing all the O rings and gaskets.
The same went for the left hand carb. 12mm for the float and 1.5cc for the pump jet. Also set these to what they should be again. Same as the right or as near as I can.
The engine now purrs and I can adjust the idle to 900 RPM quite easily; actually the fuel flow and air flow needles on the idle circuit are now very sensitive and work well.
So took the car to a mechanic who said he had a CO meter to get this right but alas his meter was too old and did not change readings no matter where the needle was. I ended up with 2.5 turns from fully in which seems to be a good setting. No idea if she is running lean or rich but the exhaust popping has now stopped.
Bella (2l 1976 buss) now runs very well, starts on the first turn in the morning and accelerates with a smooth curve.
What was done in the end to the engine:-
1) New pistons and rings
2) Gas flowed the heads with new valves, seats and guides
3) New bushes on the butterfly arms of the carburettors (made a huge difference)
4) Electronic ignition
5) Reconditioned carburettors set as best I can
6) Removed the choke assembly completely – blocked up the holes with a too large piece or round rubber. So now choke butterflies at all
What was done in the end to the body:-
1) New ball joints at the front
2) New steering tie rod and drag links
3) New paint – not the best job but she looks good
4) New carpets and covered seats
5) Decent sound
6) New rubbers on the doors – also not perfect the rear door is not stock so comes loose
All in all nearly a years work but very much worth it. Steve’s Auto in Kyalami did a dyno test on her and she has 60Kw at the wheels up here in Johannesburg. A good number to have considering that it was 56Kw on the factory floor at sea level.
