hi guys, yesterday i fitted a golf carb to my 1300 beetle, made a adaptor plate. Everything fits nicely but, i started it but it wont idle, tried adjusting the CO screw, if that would make a diference , if i set the idling high, it idles for a short while and splatters and dies if i dont give it gas. Also when i rev it a bit it takes longer than normal to get back to idling speed. What can be the problem? All help will be apreciated

What golf carb did you use and are you using the elec idling jet on the carb?

i bought the carb at goldwagen, um i dont know? how can i tell? the engine isnt running as smooth as it should when idling at about 1500, i thought the jets might be too big or small or a vacuum leak?

The goldwagen carbs are the same as factory Keihin carbs (copy).

Make sure the electric solonoid on the carb is working - eg it needs a wire to earth the carb it to the engine if you are using a rubber/backelite footpiece. It could be that the idle jet on the carb is to big - it is usually jetted for 1600/1800 applications when you buy it new.

ok i took the earth wire off, will put it back then coz i am using the rubber 'gasket'. i hear the solenoid kick when i turn the ignition on. can i buy other idle jets seperately?

spent this whole time facing the adaptor, hope it helps...

No dude you got it all wrong. When doing a golf conversion you replace the whole engine. Not just the carb!

On a serious note. Are you running stock fuel pump? Did you fit the vapour cannister with the fuel return to tank? I had loads of problems when I tried to bypass it. The needle and seat are very sensitive on these carbs. Either gets too much fuel or too little.

Progressive type single carbs are extremely difficult to set up on a AC motor, you have compounded the problem by just bolting on a adapter and throtling the operation of the golf carb.

First step would be to ensure that the exhaust heating part of inlet manifold is functioning and not blocked inside.

I have done a Nissan 1400 carb on a beetle. Works like magic because the jetting is closer.

yes i have the standard fuel pump, just thought i would give it a try. no i did not fit that canister. thought the standard pump would give just enough petrol that no return is needed. a friend told me that a golf carb would work because it will give only as much fuel as the engine needs. calooker that same friend that gave me the advice had a 1600 beetle with a 36 weber progressive carb and that went like stink so i think it can be done and if a fail it doesnt matter. going to put it on agian on saturday and try to sort it out.

Yes, it can be done with much tinkering & trial & error.
I too have ran a 36 weber DCD carb but it took some time & work before the jetting, linkage & air filter was sorted, won't try it again, not worth the gain, twin carbs ... YES
Heating of the manifold is a must, make sure the heat risers are connected & working.

yes if i struugle too much i will scrap the idea, i have the carb so i might as well try something with it. my current exhaust doesnt have the heaters for the intake... it sometimes 'freezes' (get very cold and i can see some condensation water) with the SU carb i have on now but its never given any problems and is lighter on fuel than the original solex so if the golf carb doesnt work ill stick with the SU

got a barch buggy and didnt want the standard beatle carb- did the same thing, bought a golf carb from goldwagen and made an adapter. This is what i've found.
The engine idles beautifully and starts at first turn of key. The carb sets up well and tunes easily.
When accelerating in second gear from low speed- the engine sputters and coughs until the engine speed increases above 2000 rpm ( approx)
Once the engine has gathered some momentum, the power builds beautifully and the car goes well
Im suspecting my problem is ignition related and even changed the dizzy (009) for a standard VW unit with vacuum advance - No change but have n't had time to play around. Bought a plastic adapter to fit the top of the carb and made a plastic pipe mod to fit a cone filter that is hidden behind the shroud- Keeps the fltler out of the way and leaves the engine looking un- cluttered.

Whether I'll eventually succeed totally- -NOt sure time will tell
This type of carb works on many vehicles, cant see why it wont work on an aircooled.
