1979 Bay Engine Change

Hi there all you good People

So this Bay has been standing for too long now, so today, me myself and I (sure you have heard that 1 before) decided that something has to be done otherwise..................... Toyota Rav4 Rav4 and................you guesed it.......Rav4.

You must take in consideration now that I have about 8 X 7mm, 7 X 10mm, 2 X 12mm and something like a 14mm a 17mm oh yeah do have a set of Gedore sockets. I do also own a trolley jack,

So the engine Bay was not dark but not very well lit, so I took 1 of the new led fittings in the house and WALLA all was clear. WOW, the previous owner did not worry too much about wiring, lots of open wires, cut wires and different colour wires used for extensions.

So, off with the battery reminal, and disconnected or cut and mark the wires that can be dropped with the motor. Guy's, this did not take 30min, it took me 2hrs + !!!

Now, all you "ACVWSA JUNKIES", wich bolts do I now loosen to drop that motor, and any other advice you can give me, I say PRETTY-PRETTY-PLEASE.

:idea: Oh Yes, tomorow I will be building my own ramps using WOOD. I will post some pics :D

The part of the sentence that goes ..." going to build me a wooded ram... already had an expression of pain running down my spine...... :shock:

Before you rip out the engine, may I be so bold to take you to the most helpful part of this forum, and that is the "Search" button in the top right corner of every page of this forum.......(look now for it....)

You will find that so many guys have done this before, right here on the forum, that you can save time, skin, and lots of blood by reading up on it.

Have my self explained in detail how to take the type 4 engine out single handed WITHOUT killing your self. using only a trolly jack and a few stands.

Read as much as you can, then the job will be more fun, less blood, less strange languages, and a excellent result.

I appreciate all postings and guidelines, I am sure that you all want to help me do this, my first project on my Bay, right. I will post pics soon as I can. As for my wooden ramps, I still don't have a problem making them but my wife is threatening to sell my Bus should I go through with it. Suppose I now need to go and buy some..........

If you look at the thread above, on the fastback, you will see a wood beam under the car, lifting the Back spring blade stop blocks
These stick out past the car.
You place your trolly jack under this beam, in the center, and lift the car by lifting the center of this bar.
You then place stands under the wood beam when you have enough height to clear the motor on a jack.
You then place an old damp rag onto the trolley jack balance the motor on the jack, (lift one side , slide jack under, and tilt motor back onto the jack), should be slightly to the pulley side of the oil drain.Slide motor under car and lift half the height, and place blocks under j-pipes, heater box, remover jack and lower body off stands, and standing on floor.
Place jack under the engine again, and lift into gearbox, tilting slightly for the entry of the spigot shaft. push motor home and bolt.
You may ask why I drop the body when the motor in under it, because the jack lifting height is to low, and becomes dangerous if you wedge it up with blocks.
Also, it is easy to put car in gear and rock it to get the spigot shaft into the splines of the clutch plate.
As the engine is heavy, do not place blocks on top of blocks as I have it on the one photo, it may slip and hurt you, that motor is not easy to stop when it comes for you.
If the motor is perfectly balanced on the jack, you can twist it, and moving it to get it in, and you can hold it while jacking with the other hand.
I always slide smaller "Catch Blocks" under when in the air in case it does slip.
Hope it is of help to you and has made the whole thing safer.

THE MOTOR IS OUT!!!!, now where is that other motor???

So ok, This was easier than I thought
Here's what I did

First the battery was disconected. Then I disconnected all the wiring, marking them as I went along. Then I blocked of the fuel line to the fuel pump, and disconected it there after. I removed the air cleaner and disconected all the odds and ends. Then I removed the rear bumper, jacked the bus on the jacking points and placed the jack stands in there places under the tortionbar beam. I placed 2 old tyres underneath the exhaust ports, for a safety precaution. I then placed the jack( with a plank on it) underneath the motor and jacked it up until it took some engine weight. I loosened the bottom 2 nuts on the bellhousing and then loosened the engine mounting completely. After making sure all is safe, I then proceded to the top 2 nuts on the bellhousing and loosened them. I slowly let the jack down, and the motor came out without a glitch.....
