Hi Volks

Following John Alves and Tony Z's post yesterday http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/viewtopi ... =4&t=27507
regarding the possible installation of an Oil Temp Gauge into Johns ACVW, I remembered buying the most amazing little item last year on thesamba.com

True to Tony's advice, one of the easiest ways to check the oil temperature of your motor is to feel and hold the dipstick. I did this for a while, and being thick skinned  I never always trusted what I felt due to my high pain thresh hold.

I bought one of these Hot Oil Sensors last year, and installed it within 2 minutes. It consists of a wired sensor that replaces your current dipstick and simply plugs onto your oil pressure switch terminal. This then makes the oil pressure light on your ACVW's dash serve a dual purpose. It now gives you oil pressure and warns you when your oil temperature is increasing and when it reaches temperatures that could kill your engine. .

It comes pre-calibrated for your ACVW Type 1 engine (beetle, bus, or Ghia)

You can check their youtube clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bE0FArCu-uo

They normally retail for $35 each + 23.95 world wide postage.
This equates to about ZAR 545.00 at todays exchange rate before any customs duties.

This device is simple, cost effective and easy to install and could increase or save the life or your ACVW engine. A bargain if you consider the cost of an engine rebuild these days. A good quality Oil Temp gauge and sender can cost anything from R1000 - R1500.Its something, I feel, all of us should have on our engines.

I have 15 on order and secured a good shipping deal, hence me being able to offer them for
R420 each including postage to you door anywhere in SA.

If you would like one, place your order with me ASAP as I already have 2 or 3 spoken for.

nice idea... theoretically you could also calibrate it manually for any temperature you want.

Just remember (you can pay me later Muds) that you will need to keep the contact points clean as copper will get a green layer over time and this will prevent the mechanical contact from actually doing anything electrically wise. Polishing with brasso (also sold my Muds ;-) ) once every month or two will avoid this problem.

When checking oil level do you need to remove electrical terminal?

Hi John, the sensor unit will measure you oil level as well as sending the oil temp data to the warning light.

You can always keep your old dipstick close by to compare levels.
