My Ghia has still got its original 1300 box even though i am now running a 1600 twin-port engine.. I want to eventually put in a 1600 box but some1 told me that it wouldn't fit in my car because the rear end is too narrow.. Is this true? And if so how hard would it be to make the 1600 box fit?

My '58 Ghia had a 1600 box in. With 165 tyres, it fits but its a close shave.

Pine had a KG!?

It will fit but the front mounting on the later 1600 trannys are different, they have 3 hole mounting, you will need to get the earlier 2 hole type.

Yes, indeed. Bought it in George a few years ago and drove it back to Bloemfontein. These are one of the very few pics I have of it, taken in Beaufort West next to an abandoned Type 3 Square Back wreck on the side of the road:



It had a 1600TP engine and 1600 gearbox. On a slight downhill through the Karoo, it did an easy (indicated) 100mph - almost 160km/h. With that same engine in the Buggy, however, I could hardly get 110 km/h, due to wind resistance and rolling resistance of the 245/15 rear wheels. On this enlarged pic you can see how close the rear wheels (std 165 Mabor tyres) cleared the wheel arch:

Somehow Pine in a KG just doesn't picture right in my mind.

Hope you stripped that Type 3?

The KG I bought and drove back from Natal had those Mabors on it...that's closer to picturing my Life than I'd like to be thank you.

No it doesn't The girlfriend loved it, though - and she ended up rear-ending one of those little 'fast back' Colt cars with a towbar. Ghia's nose had some bad damage. Sold it 'as is' - minus the engine - for more than what I paid for it 6 months earlier.

The Ghia has since been repaired, and is still running in Bloem.

Recent developments have come to light Pine, you should have taken the damn windscreen from that Squareback, I need it for the Fasty!!!

We'll get you a windsecreen soon, dont worry!

We'll get the car to Pretoria first then source a 'screen...
