Think its old legend, that a beetle overheats when towing.

Seen a lot of guys do it. Still think its contra effective

If he had sense, he would have padded the place where the hood rests.

It is very contra-effective. It allows the hot air flowing out under the car to be sucked back into the engine compartment, which, as we all know, is the inlet plenum for the cooling fan, and a low pressure area, thus causing hot air re-circulation.

This is not the same with a beach buggy or a baja bug since on these, the engines are completely exposed. No chance for re-circulation since there is not a significant low pressure area.

Tend to disagree with this.

Ryan had to run like that on this years trip to George and Tom Bishop had to open his deck lid on his Kubel a few years ago coming back from George. Both times the vehicles ran better with the deck lids open.

I must agree with Hitlers Revenge. I also think it keeps the engine a bit cooler with the lid slightly open.
