What is the difference between a pre '70 pan half and a post '71 pan half

The reason for me asking is that I see on wolfsburg west website they list pan halves for '56-'70 and then '71-'72

It might be the type of seat rail used on the newer pan vs the older type pan. New style seat rails are similar to what was used on the mk1 golfs'

Remember that, since the mid 60's, Uitenhage did'nt follow German spec when they made the beetles. (High local content was required). For instance, overseas a slightly larger rear window was introduced in 1971, but i think Uitenhage continued using the earlier window till the last beetles. Exception was the round screen "S", because the rear window surround was part of the roof/ body pressing where the front screen mounted as well. However the later gearbox mounting found it's way to the pan around 73.

Always be careful about overseas specifications, especially from the USA, which often had different spec cars than rest of the world.

Ok cool that was actually the answer I was hoping for.

Cause my reason for enquiringly about the pan halves is- I have a '63 pan that was rusted vrot.I got 1/4 repair panels with the purchase of the car.So what I did was repair the battery side first (was the better side ?? normally the worst) But in the end I wasn't happy with the end results.You could see that the panel was repaired.So I was on the hunt for another pan but could not find a rust free early pan with the knob heater control.

And proper pan halves is a tad pricey for me.(allot actually).I then thought what better way than to replace the pan halves with genuine VW pressed steel from latter pans

I then placed a wanted ad on the forum and got a pan for free from Datwagen where the left side was perfect- painstakingly removed all the spot welds and welded the left-side on my pan.

And yesterday on my way to the shop I spotted a bakkie with 2 pans on the back presumably on his way to a scrap metal dealer.Asked him to pull over and bought the 1 pan that was still rust free at the battery side (with the battery hold down strap in place)

And I know the left side was the same on all beetles and I've measured it like 20 times before I welded it in place.

But did not have a chance to measure and check it yesterday and wanted to refer to WW and noticed the change.
I'm going to measure it still but feel better now that I can actually finish my pan.
