At present I have the following for sale and will be sold either as is and 'chemi cleaned on the outside', or 'chemi cleaned' and rebuilt with new carb rebuild kits, or kits sold seperately.

1 set of dual (Italian) Weber 36 IDF's with brand new EMPI intake manifolds. No linkage or filters

R4000 (Rebuilt with new carb kits)

1 x Weber (Italian) 36IDF carb with centre mount intake manifold with new rubber seals and jubilee clamps, Chrome filter base and top and new EMPI filter element 52mm(High) these can be used in your kombi with type 1 engine too, with no clearance issues.

Are these weber carbs much better than the solex carbs and if so, why?

Cyndi, he means yes the Webers are better than Solex carbs at making more affordable bolt on power. The VW beetle and its engine was produced with only 1 thing in mind... getting it on the forecourts as cheaply as possible. Hence the decision to go with single solex carbs and single port heads from the factory..

if you need to replace your stock carb with a new one, it will be a chinese copy of your stock solex and a bad copy at the best of times. This will set you back almost R2000 and give you hassles almost as quickly as the guy that sold you it took your money... LOL,

A brand new Spanish made Weber 36 IDF will cost you almost R3700 locally just for the carb alone.

Isn't my carb a 34? Can a 36 fit? What does ict and idf stand for?

Presuming that you are running a 1600 cc engine in your bus, then yes a Weber 36 idf can work on your motor provided you use it mated to a centre mount intake and filter. Run it with a nice exhaust and 009 distributor and you can make nice power that your bus will need especially uphill or laden. First prize would be to have used a rebuilt solex 34 pict carb. Your VW guy even with his 40 years experience did not do a good job on your carb and probably missed the leaking spindle completely. Those brass bushes wear out after 30 plus years and will leak fuel like Juju lacks brains, and a surefire, excuse the pun, way to burn your bus to the ground. The 36 idf is a weber model denoting its size and application. ICT would denote single port whereas EPH would be dual port.

you need to decide what u want from the carb and then we can advise what to go for.

We will have a better idea after the weekend after we have taken out the engine. My dad will strip the carb and see if he can tell what's wrong or if it actually had the new kit put in at all. My solex is definitely more like the top picture Tony.

Update PM Weber center mount.

Hi Cyndi, if you go that route, you are getting into the exiting world of bolt on go faster bits. It's fine, and all but one of my (running) ACVWs (4) are running twin IDF Webers (36 and 44s) and 009 distributors, some with points and one without. BUT: you are entering a different world. Standard tune-up guides and adjustment values are out the window. While the results are great, it costs money and time to get there, while staying standard is easier and cheaper, think about it, if you rebuild your carb well, it will last another 30 years, by which time you will be almost as old as Muds and me (not Pine, he's still young and handsome), you'll certainly have more hair than TonyZ (LOL!!) and hopefully you'll still be into your bus. You are at a cross roads.

Well it looks as if I will be staying with the old and original for now.
Jolas organised for my old carb to be redone and although my engine is still not together or back from the engineer's, we will be using the solex when we get it back.

Hi Muds do what would a single barrel webber carb cost and will you be able to get one of these heard they were better than the solex .

You heard that from someone who's either F'ed up their Solex, worn it out or hasn't figured out how to tune it. Would you trust them to get an aftermarket part 'right' on an engine that they can't get the part the part the manufacturer specifically designed for the application to work correctly? I wouldn't.

"Better" is a matter of perspective.

Most single carb' swops were explained away in a similar 'Solex is shit' fashion to me, seemingly always by those who had little clue how to adjust any thing other than their crotch.
