Could you (read, "me") use this g.box as a direct (no mods required) bolt-in unit to replace the really irritating short ratio box (read, " I can only get 100km/h then the engine wants to explode") on my single cab 1600 DP?

The answer you seek to the question you didn't realise that you were asking...

Ha, ha! That's comical in an odd sort of way. Thanks for the cackle Merlin.

Seriously though, the car has a pearler of a smooth motor built by Tony Z, new rims and tyres and brand new brakes, and I mean calipers, discs and master cyl. like new including flushing out the old brake fluid from the whole system. I do a lot of travelling and it would be nice to get to a comfortable 120kph without stressing the motor out.

Just a simple yes or no will suffice.

Edit: Bugger!!!!!! Help!!!!!

Stand totally under correction, but i seem to recall later boxes has worse ratios then early ones.
But other then change the box, fit bigger wheels.
The bus is made to carry 1 ton load, so strength you have in the drive train, so fit big wheels.
Have big wheels on my Fugly, and she runs a treat on the high way.

Thanks Herman. I already went quite a bit bigger in the tyre department which has helped a bit. I stuck to commercial tyres for safety reasons under work load too.

I did speak to Bugger once and he mentioned a 5 rib. I think he called it Pyramid. I was wondering if this was it?

I believe late and early bay gearboxes are interchangeable. But I'm not certain that one is a bay box; it may be a T3 box. I'm sure Bugger will chime in shortly with a definitive view.

That's not a 5 rib pyramid gearbox. Its the later 6 rib 2.0 gearbox. It will fit in your bus, straight swap over.

The gear ratio's are not that different from the 3 rib (1600) box though. Its not going to make your bus any faster. Doubt that 1600 would even be able to push it to 120km/h.
