Hi guys,

Just put everything together after resprayed my 74 bug.
Upon start up the Gen/alt light stays on while car is on.

I just bought new battery cos previous one was swollen.

Now the car will act funny. It will start effortlessly and then 5 mins later it will not and seems as if battery is dead.
Then tomorrow it will start again.

Could it be that a rewired alternator incorrectly?

Thnks...

Enjoy the festive season everyone :hangloose:

Do you have an alternator or generator with external voltage regulator ?

No what you have is dirty Earths and loose wires.

Take off all your earth wires , clean them with sandpaper and refit.
Make sure all your wires have been tightened down with star washers.

Pretty sure its a generator with external regulator yes.

Only thing a took off was the regulator. Did some colour coding inside the engine bay.
Generator black and regulator green...and so on...

with the light on in the cluster upon ignition tells me that atleast the circuit is complete. Not sure if the other two wires connected to gen and regulator are operational. (although they were before)
My fanbelt could be a mm or 2 loose than recommended but doubt that could be the issue.
I will check and clean connector pins on regulator and gen in the am and see if thats the case.
Dnt want to go buy a new generator unless i know thats the problem.

It is possible you have the two "outlet" wires on the regulator the wrong way around.

Thanx Tony.

I did however switch the outlet wires in the beginning.
Now the is nothing when i swing.
No click nothing. indicators work lights work and so on, but no start.

Could it be that i sprayed over the generator and got some paint over the copper wires?

then probably either your ignition switch is faulty or you have roasted the starter solenoid

double check everything again
