Edited;- Rock & Roll Bed Brackets -10 sets -WHO wants????

http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/viewtopi ... 98#p278098

Hi Guys,

As some of you may know, Fig has so kindly lent me a set of "Home Made" rock & roll brackets.

The idea was to take them and possibly improve on them so that we can offer these Rock & Roll bed brackets to some of the guys here on the forum.

So here are some photos of the progress, till now.

Using the "Fugly" as a test body, ....

Image

Here are a set of the Prototype brackets , ready for installation.

Image

So the seat had to come out, and the carpet removed.....

Image
Image

The brackets where mounted to the Base Side Panels...

Image
Image

and the frone panel of the base is screwed to the base sides....

Image

Then the back rest and the seats where bolted to the brackets, and ......

one Rock & Roll VW Bed.....

Image

So here a run of pic's of the seat folding into a bed, and then back again.....

Image

Image

Image
Image

Image

Oh !! Yes, here with the seat flap up, to enable loading of goods into the base for safe transport.....

Image

So now, I must make the board stiffeners as well as the extended bed legs, to hold a guy of my caliber.......

Till the next up date.

Great Work There Herman

I was going to go through that whole Excersise early in 2014 as I were about to Strip my Syncro to have the brackets fabrikated as I do have Exactly the same
Setup in there
Thanks for doing the Effort for us
You can PM Me some info to costs and availability as I might be interrested in 3 sets then

If there is a few other guys interrested in a bed here in GP Then we might as well ship a few sets at once up to help for shipping

Chiirs thanks

Thanks guys, :D

Taking a bit of time, as I want to get rid of a few of the more common problems that one gets with other brackets.

They are...
Back rest to upright and uncomfortable.
Seat to horizontal and un-natural seating position.
Too weak to hold a full bodied Jappie.

So now we have the brackets working fine, the back Rest is at its correct position, and the base is sloping backward, to hug your a$h into the seat.

Now we are fitting the Back Rest lean over support, (if you lay over the seat-back, to get something) to take the weight, with out bending the brackets.

Then the back rest flat support.

Then the Flip-up seat extended support.

then the Extended seat front support legs.

Then we will test it for strength by laying on it.....

Till then...

Right , Feed back time...

As the brackets prototypes looked OK, I when ahead and made the full bed, just to make sure it will work.

Always want to make sure it works before saying it does.....

So the Set of brackets where made and riveted.

Image

Then I used 12 mm Superwood, (also called MDF)
Used 40 x 40 x 3 mm Angle iron for strength.
Used 25 X M6 gutter bolts.

One thing I wanted to make sure of, and that is that the brackets and full bed, can take the weight of two "Full Bodied" adults.

To do this, I fitted cross beams of angle iron, to stiffen the 1500 mm wide boards.

Image
Image
Image

Now it may look a bit unfinished at this moment, but it is work in progress.

So the back rest has a beam across the top back to spread the weight of 3 "Big Boys" leaning against it.
The seat has two, one at the front edge of the seat, this not only stiffens the seat, but also has the fold up legs for the "bed"
The 2nd one is at the back of the seat, this also stiffens the back to carry 3 big a$$es as well as the bottom lip of the back rest, in the "bed" position.

Here you see the fold out load carrier beam, which can be used with heavy loads, to transfer the weight from the bed onto the base to the floor directly.

Image
Image

Right so here is the bed in seat form, note the angled back rest, the slight back slope of the seat

Image

Now notice the bolt that my hand is taking out.... that is there to hold the fold-up legs in the up position, note the one overlaps the other, so that I need but one screw.....

Image

So with retaining bolt removed, I let the legs out slightly then push the base backward, and rise the back rest off its support...

Image
Image

Letting the base with back rest slide forward, it neatly lays into its "Bed" supports....

Image

Image

Now I lift the seat and un-fold the Support beam under the seat, that will transfer the main weight to the floor of the bus....

Image

Image

The last thing to do, is fold the legs out to up-right position, and set the seat down to complete the bed...

Image

And the bed is ready for man and his dog ....

Image

A look from the tail gate hatch......

Image

And yes, with the bed in full made up form, you can still get to the pillows and blankets in the base.......

Image

Image
Image
Image
Image

Now that I am happy, I will get this bed stripped down, confirm dimensions, and have the other brackets made.

Should you like to be considered for a set, please put your name down, just to get some numbers, will not hold you to it, till I have worked out the price.

Also, please let me know if the interest is in the brackets only, or the full kit, I can also give you drawings of the timber and steel required, and you can have your local merchant cut and drill it for you.

The brackets will be assembled, and Plated, all holes drilled. the steel if wanted will be powder coated probably black, the superwood, will be raw, but I will have my upholsterer carpet it all before re-assembly into my bus. Seat covers will be made white, with Velcro to hold them in place.

Well, please pass your comments, good or bad, as we can only improve the product, to an acceptable level.

Please ask questions if my explanations are not clear, I understand them, so they must be confusing......

Old war injury, When still in GP, I hit a Taxi at 140 kph, (edited;- on a bike), managed to kick up at the last moment, and cleared the roof, but not my knees, landed on my head in front of the Taxi, he at leased had the decency to drive around me when fleeing the accident , had :bn: with them ever since.

When they stop working, we will have them reconditioned.....

Looks good. I'm definitely interested in the brackets and dimensions on the rest. I will be putting it into a 1957 Kombi. Do you know if the dimensions will be the same?
