Aircooled VW South Africa

We needed a vehicle to the Putfoot rally next year, so in my search I got of this old girl. for a bargain, if I can say so myself.
Now this would be a complete rebuild to accommodate 5-6 people, some luggage and a big fridge
The engine is 1700 petrol, but not sure about the condition, as it is in pieces in the back of the van
are these worthwhile repairing?? or should I look at fitting something else?

In my opinion you should definetely go for a 2L engine.
