Good morning gents,
Why would my alternator pulley break? After driving from town yesterday the centre of the rear half of the pulley broke and grinded into the alt housing. This was a dress up kit I bought 3 weeks ago. I have refitted the old original pulley.

simple, the dress up kit is made by EMPI who is known for producing poor quality components. Its not the first time one of these have broken

Could also be that the bearing in your Alty has gone, this is what happens, and then the fan will also move and start cutting into the housing.
Best would be to replace bearing and bush, as they are now suspect.
