A pic of the old engine, totally underpowered
A type 4 1700 engine with a modified manifold to fit a weber carburetor
Has been installed, much better drivability. But i reckon the carb needs rejetting as its heavy on petrol.
Some rust holes by passenger side feet
The back looks ok

Nice little speaker box
Need a doorhandle anyone got a spare?

Dash

Need a spring to keep the flap closed!

That looks like a delux cross over bay, and the original engine should have been a 1600 twin port,......I would say the power from the original engine is adequate.
The 1700 T4 engine came with duel Solex PICT 34 carbs, if my memory serves,....try and find them, it may sort out your fuel economy issues

Ja the engine I took out is a single port engine, it was very sluggish and gave me a top speed of 90km/h! Which meant I had to cruise 70 lol otherwise it sounds like the engine is screaming! The type 4 engine goes to 110 km/h top speed and now I can cruise at 80-90km/h very easily.
The outoppie I bought the van from said it had a "411" motor which blew and he swapped it out for the single port engine.
The1700 t4 engine thats in the bus now originally came from a variant and was fuel injected.
Im still looking for an engine mounting for the front of the engine, I think its called a moustache bar?
Are the 34 pict carbs the same as whats on a standard beetle engine?

Very nice.
Just remember to fit all the cooling tinware before you start driving. Otherwise you will cause permanent damage and soon suffer from dropped valve seats, collapsed piston skirts, etc.
Especially in a sealed compartment kombi application, it is ultra-ultra critical for adequate cooling to have all the cooling tinware in place, and your seal around engine should be in good condition. As in: you should not be able to see the ground below when looking into the engine compartment. It must be air-tight, and only draw cool air from outside via the vents.
Otherwise the used hot air will just be recirculated back into the cooling fan's intake. Getting hotter and hotter each time the air passes around.
This is especially critical with a type 4 engine, where the fan's intake is right there where the hot air exits.
Looking good so far.
Your question about the carb? The carbed version of the type 4 originally had twin 34pdsit2 and 34pdsit3 carbs, (one basically a mirror image of the other).

Can't see your pics at work, but must correct some things in Kegan's post:
72s could be ordered with the 1600TP type1 or the 1700cc type4 engine. 72 was the first year for the type4 engine in a bus. Type4 engine use a pair of Solex 32PDSIT carbs, NOT the PICTs used on single carb type1 engines. BTW, the letters on Solex carb model numbers all mean something. I can post the meanings if anyone is interested.
I agree that you'd do better with the original dual carbs rather than a single Weber or whatever. This mod was usually made on the advice of mechanics who didn't know how to tune a pair of solexes.

I concur with Fig... my 72 Cross over bay has the 1600 Motor, and Branden Mance's 72 crossover bay has, or had the 1700 Type 4 first used on 73 bays, as standard.
The Solex 32/34 PDSIT carbs (correctly jetted and tuned) are definitely the way to go for better fuel economy and performance. Going with a single centre mount carb is more of a cop out when not knowing how to tune the normal Solex twins... I drove my 73 bay panel for 7 years without any major changes to the carbs, having done CPT to George car show, Sedgefield and Knysna and around town etc (over 750kms) on a single 52 litre tank.

Hi Roscoe. Will do. I just need to dig up my Solex manual. If I haven't done it by the end of this week, please PM me a reminder.
