Aircooled VW South Africa

Hi All,

I was posting on another forum and was told would be a good idea to post here also, I'm looking at buying a classic Karmann Ghia here in Ireland, but there is no registration document with it. Which makes it really difficult to register here.

The car was imported in 2010 from South Africa and never registered here, is there any way from the chassis / VIN number I can find the SA reg doc ?
Or any sort online history check i can run.
Or any central vehicle gov body i can contact (email if possible) to try and find the details? As when I look on gov.za all i can find is it says is to contact local registering authorities

Any help would be much appreciated.

Who is the current owner - the car should have had its registration certificate with it when it was exported from here ? If the car is still registered to someone here in ZA, and you were able to contact this "owner", then getting a duplicate registration certificate would be possible .... But only the current registered owner can do this

Registration document has been lost, and cant get contact details for last owner. So thats why i want to be sure it wasnt stolen or anything.

If the VIN is in the current computerised records, then only the registered owner can get a duplicate registration document, and they have to present themselves at their local vehicle licensing office in person. There is a process whereby a third party can get a duplicate in the case of lost papers, but it entails getting police clearance on the VIN and engine numbers (ie, present the car to the police), as well as affidavits from the new owner stating how he came to be in possession of the car and how the papers were lost, and also adverts in the paper to try to track down the registered owner. I have never heard of anyone using this process and I doubt any local licensing office would even know the process, given my experience with them.

If I were you I would try to send an email to one of the contacts on the Department of Transport web pages, but don't hold your breath waiting for a response ...
