Today we started with the preliminary medical on the Kombi.

We fitted a battery and checked for ignition at the engine. It checked out O.K. and the starter swung happily.

We jury rigged a small bottle of petrol to the fuel pump, but the fuel pump was not cooperating. Closer inspection of the pump revealed a crack at the pivot. A replacement pump was sourced from Centparts.

We now had fuel at the carb, but the engine would start and die immediately.
We then found the accelerator pump to be faulty (caused by a dried out diaphragm). Our sacrificial carb contributed its diaphragm and top gasket to replace the damaged original.

On our next try, the engine started easily and settled into a nice fast idle as the choke warmed up.
There were no knocks or smoke so we let it run for a few minutes.
(the video is about 30 secs long and take a while to load)

Now we know that the engine was running, we turned our attention to the fuel tank. It was bone dry and seemed free from rust, so we connected the fuel lines and put in R100 fresh unleaded.

Again the bus started easily and after letting it run for a few minutes, we decided to go for broke and drive it.

The clutch worked fine, gears selected easily, the gearbox is nice and quiet, so we drove it a couple of times around the complex.

Now it is the brakes that need attending to, as 30 odd years of standing were not that kind tot the callipers.

The gearshift is as any Kombi I had ever driven, so it was off for the maiden voyage around our complex.

It turned out the gearbox is perfect, the steering is good, but the brakes are shot.

All and all a positive and productive morning was had.

Now we can move on to the brakes........

I thought I saw the Crewcab the other day...photo with Cellsound ang Garming was the confirmation...John Vorster drive...Highveld side.

I've just collected my bus from Centoria - they've "resleeved" my master cylinder, and a while back redone the linings on the brake pads for me...slave cylinder kits I got crom Centpart (Steve)...that should solve all your brake issues..

I just LUF them CrewCabs...that is next on the Shopping list!

Enjoy it.

Just dropped off the brake components at Centoria.

Re-sleeve master cylinder, new slave cylinders, new drums, recon calipers, rebond shoes and skim the discs.
All flexible hoses will be replaced.

Wheels are in for sandblast and powder coat before new shoes.

I love it when a plan comes together.

I am trying to address all the issues that might affect reliability on the way to Stellenbosh

This week we got the wiring sorted. Even the hooter works - though it sounds like a very frightened lamb.

We got the brake components back:
New rubber brake pipes
These I had made up by a hydraulic shop, as my local spares shop did not have what I needed.

Rebuilt calipers

new pads
new slave cylinders
re-bonded shoes
new drums

We had the discs skimmed and now everything goes back together.

The sideshafts came out to have the CV's cleaned and inspected.
(What a mission to find the bolts under many years' mud)
They will go back next week.

That looks lekke, drove past it yesterday, saw it standing on the "Bokkies" - a sign that it is getting the LUF it deserves! Hope all the smoke stays inside the engine all the way down to the fairest Cape! Hope the wiper motor works, as most of the Zebras we've seen in the reserves on our Roadtrip was roaming up the hills - apparently a sign that the beeg rain is on the way! You should actually plot your route, and post it on the forum, and get locals to support you all the way down home! That will also serve as a "Riemtelegram" to inform the rest of us that "Skillie" has just past "e.g. Putsonderwater" and is on track and running smoothly!

Cheers,
Marius.
