At long last, it will start soon...

So, back in 2012 I joined this forum and was looking at starting a project and asked some advise (http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/viewtopi ... =4&t=24119).
Well as you all know life happens and things change, so my plans got put on hold.
I will be looking at a '74 bug in the next couple of days that I am interested in buying. (I am sure some of you have seen it advertised all over, Yellow one with 1800 Golf motor).
I would like to know from you guys what I should be looking out for? Obviously I will make sure the paperwork is complete and correct etc, but mechanically what are the things to look out for with a conversion like this?
The reason that this bug caught my eye is due to me wanting to get something I can enjoy and start fixing over time, instead of having a bug in garage for a couple of years before getting to enjoy it. This particular bug looks good (on the photos) and it is a nice starting point.
If I do buy it, I have not yet decided whether I will convert back to air-cooled, but I do know down the line I will strip and respray in colors that I like more than the current color, converting to disc brakes, change the stance of the bug, change the dash, probably the wheels and remove the "racing" bucket seats. But hey, while I plan and save money for those, I will be able to drive it and have some fun.
