Hi, I need some advise please. Im about to purchase a 1600s beetle which is in a very good condition. My question is, what is a fair price to pay for this car? The car is original, still runs and drives well and licensed. I think the model is 1975 if Im not mistaken.

a fair price is a price that you are happy to pay and the owner is happy to receive.
Depending on the condition it could be worth from 10K to 100K.
Remember, it is only worth what the buyer is prepared to pay - the owner cannot dictate the worth.

I know this doesnt help you, but its pretty much an open ended question with just one picture... kinda hard to tell.

I am looking at buying a 95% restored 1600s, 78 model. Now I know it is not possible to estimate the price correctly, but would it be worth more than R50K then or can it still be less?

Dawid, my personal opinion:
1. If you pay R10K or R50K for the car, it does not matter, as you can take my word, be sure that you will at least spend another R30K to R40K to fix the prevous guys
2. Or to build the car according to your likes.

You need to ask yourself some questions:
1. Why do you want to buy a Beetle?
2. Will this be a hobby, or will you be using it as a daily driver?
3. Are willing to roll up your sleeves and get dirty?

You will be buying and investing in a vehicle that is 38 years old (paint to a vehicle is like make-up to an ageing woman)

The best bet, if you are looking at restoring/collecting, is to look for a car in a decent condition, at a reasonable price, that has not been "restored" and start from there.

If you are looking at buying to commute to and from work, you will need a reliable vehicle (you cannot count on the current owner's word about it's condition).

Thanks a lot for the valuable contribution. When I started to search for a Beetle I thought I would achieve it without great effort, but it seems not to be that easy, but I have come to learn a great amount of them by now. This Beetle will be something between a hobby, every other day daily driver, and investment car and a feeder of my sentiment for a Beetle (and classic car). The guy selling the car did give me a 45min tour of everything he did to the car, as well as what still needs to be done, so I kind of have an idea of what to expect. If I compare it to any other cars below R50K, this is a must have. I will be making an offer today.

P.S. I will try not to hijack posts in the future, just thought it elaborates on the theme.

Completely agree with Gerhard's opinion above.

I bought my bus because it was something I always wanted. I am a bean counter so I have no mechanical background. Be sure that you will be spending money on this bug. You can trust the current owner as much as you want, its an old car and problems are going to pop up.

Even if you get it for R40k (condition looks decent) and spend another R20k, its worth the money if it gives you a smile on your face every time you get into that car.

Buy it and enjoy it.

Well, there is this app for iPhones called Volkswagen Bug - EBG that can assist you in making the decision, it looks informative, not sure how applicable it is on SA Beetles.
