Ghia transmission with 1600 motor
Hallo Gents,
I wonder if someone can tel me if the 1300 flywheel is smaller than the
16oo vw flywheel. I want to fit a 12 v starter to my Ghia or do I need to do a centre swap on the flywheel.
Thank you
Braam

There are 2 flywheel sizes. The 6v flywheel measures 180mm and the 12v 200mm. The number of teeth also differ. That is why you can only use a 6v starter on a 6v flywheel. You can however change your 6v solenoid to a 12v unit. Then is is possible to use the 6v starter on a 12v system.
The other question is does your car have a 6v or 12v transmission?

You will have to grind away at the gearbox a bit to accommodate the 12v flywheel. Fit a new bush in place for the starter motor shaft and then you can fit the 12v starter no problem.
Or you can go further and swop your old transmission for a 1600 one which has a taller 4th gear. You will run out of gears with a 1600 motor on a 1100 gearbox.

The problem is that 12v models had extra teeth on the ring gear (130 in stead of the 6v flywheel's 109) It is also slightly larger in diameter (read clearance problems) using it with an early tranny. The starter motor can be made to fit changing the bronze bushing on the transmission bell-housing. You can also fit the early flywheel on your later engine, but not the other way round.
The easiest way to clearance an early tranny for a 12v 130tooth flywheel is to put the engine into the bell-housing as far as it can go. Turn the engine over with a socket so that the teeth of the flywheel mark the bell-housing. One the engine is removed, you can grind out the clearnce needed.

1100 tranny is similar in gearing to a 1600 tranny so that statement is not true, the a big difference is between a 1200 & 1600 tranny. I would swop out that 6V crash box for a later SF 1600 tranny, 1100 trannys have no syncro in first gear a bastard to drive in traffic, your ride will need to be completely stoped before you can select 1st gear.vintageVW wrote: You will run out of gears with a 1600 motor on a 1100 gearbox.

Yes you can check up on the code, it is visible from under the car just behind the frame horn behind the axle boot on the drivers side it will start with SF then the next 2 letters will tell you what you have, let me know what they are and I will tell you what tranny you have. You may need to clean the are up a little to see the # a leed light, brush and some degreaser will do the trick. Off the top of my head SFAS, SFAO is 1600 SFAB, SFAE is 1300, but let me know I will make 100% sure for you.
