Hi best conversion is the Golf motor with Hidden Radiator under neath the Bus

We have done a lot of them including a few Autovillas

I had a bay window with golf motor and towed my Heavy Double cab Microbus on a car trailer with it

Hi guys

I have a '81 Autovilla with a Toyota 2.2 4Y motor. Water-cooled.
In December it suddenly started overheating. We already replaced the waterpump, thermostat and even the water pipes from the radiator in front to the back. Also fitted a fan ontop of the motor to try and keep the motor cooler. Nothing helped.

Any advice will be highly appreciated

Your problem is you have a Toyota engine in a Volkswagen. It doesn't belong there. You will find if you throw out this contraption and install an original setup, your reliability will be restored.

Have you bled the system correctly. You must take thst carb off and fit a 1600 golf carb the original not cheap one you wont beleive the difference smooth more power better fuel consumtion. Thats if you cant get a aircooled motor as Sean says. Make sure you have the 2.6 Caravel radiator 2 speed fan and cowling and a big header tank to hold more fluid.my 2c worth.

Are you running antifreeze ??

Have a look at your thermostat as It gets an air bubble under it and it will not open.

The old Toppies always drilled a 3mm hole in the thermostat disk to allow the air to pass but not to effect the workings of the thermostat.

All old conversions had this done to stop air trapping.

When doing racing all my engines had this and never had heating problems.

No , water cooled, when you switch off a hot water cooled engine, it makes bubbles, and these sit behind the thermostat disk, when you start, the disk is cold with air behind it where the bellow is to sense the heat, so as the engine heats up, the air does not transfer the heat to the bellow and the engine overheats without the thermostat opening.

Now the little hole allows the air to pass through so this does not happen, and is so small it will not effect your normal cold start water flow.
