I believe there is a current service to have your car transported to SA destinations by rail? Does the cost beat the cost of driving the same distance? This pic was posted on FB today. Fig what is the closest railway station to Vaalplasie?

Interesting. I knew they offered this service, but had no idea they have purpose built closed wagons for cars. I wonder how secure the service is and what price is compared to using road transport.
AFAIK closest rail station is Vereeniging, about 50km away.

I cant understand why anyone would want to do this. Cape Town to JHB is R3500 for a small car and R4880 for a big car. Then your individual person ticket is R700 p/p for a sleeper cab or R440 p/p if you prepared to sit in a chair for the 26 hour trip.

That pretty much answers my question(s) - thanks

I did it in 1999 when I moved from JHB back to Cape Town. I crammed everything I owned into the beetle and most of what my brother owned, drove the bug to JHB central station where it was loaded onto the top deck of the carriage.
A long 26hrs later we were in CPT and watched the car get unloaded. No mess, no fuss. Brandy made the trip much more exciting...
