Aircooled VW South Africa

Hi All.
Please can someone decipher this vin plate on my bus. We suspect that it was rebuilt or the colour changed at some stage (long time ago) and that it is not in original spec. Not that I am complaining or am disappointed as I quite like its colour scheme, but we think it was beige previously. This is mainly due to the engine bay colour. Or are we being daft and its actually white that has just gone beige after all the years?

I was also told that at a stage VW only produced one colour and there were companies that painted the vehicles according to the order that was received. Not sure how true this is though.

No I couldn't make head or tails of it. Seems the SA plates are totally different.
I did get Confirmation from fig that it's a 78 though.

Apart from year model, no, it won't.

South African buses had many unique features including things like paint codes. Dawie has made some progress in deciphering some of the SA VIN-plate codes, but you won't find any info online.
