Scientific Publications VW Beetle 1100, 1200, 1300, 1500 (softcover, published 1970, covers all Beetles up to 1967)
Clymer VW Beetle (softcover, published 1957, covers all models up to 1957)
Haynes Porsche 911 (hardcover, all models up to 3.2 litre)

They all have their pros and cons. Autobooks and Haynes are the most popular. Intereurope is also good.

In general, aftermarket manuals are written by qualified engineers and based on a complete stripdown and rebuild of the relevant car. Many of them are also written in conjunction with VWAG and use some images from the factory workshop manuals. They all have different structures and styles, but all are based on factory technical specs and info. None of them is written to the level of detail of factory workshop manuals, but I find all of them useful.
