Hi Folks,

Anyone use/makes/sells bio diesel in this neck of the woods?

I'd like to explore bio diesel on a 2004 Colt N/A common rail diesel, but don't have a plot to brew the stuff on - wanna buy "off the shelf".

What are your EXPERIENCES USING bio diesel on your vehicles - especially passenger vehicles.

Not much seems to be said on this matter on this forum.

I think the reason it isnt a topic is because its not really available locally
before you start using it, make sure your car can run on ethanol and that the fuel lines can take the stuff without being destroyed by it.

There is more to a fuel than just the price. You need to take into account the calorific value (how much power is stores in liquid form) vs the cost.
I read a while back that the biofuel available in Brazil was half the price of the petrol, but it had 33% of the calorific value. So in the end, you paid half the price per liter but used 3 times as much fuel to do the same thing - end result, it was 50% more expensive to run.
Thats likely changed and likely less of a factor in established economies though.

The government has passed a law stating that anyone selling any fuel has to pay tax on it and has to sell it at the regulated price set down by the fuel board.

So unless you moonshine your own in your back yard, you will not find many that want to take on the task of loosing money.

"Biodiesel producers must register with SARS and apply for either a Commercial or Non-commercial producers licence.

A non-commercial licence is for small producers. The limitation on production is 300 000 litres of biodiesel per annum. The advantage of this licence is that producers do not pay the Fuel Levy and Road Accident Fund Levy.

A commercial licence is for industrial size producers. There is no limitation on production but the producer must pay 50% of the Fuel Levy and 100% of the Road Accident Fund Levy.

Commercial producers must also apply to the Department of Energy for a Manufacturing Licence and a Wholesale Licence."

When I was on the mines in Witbank in the 80s we all had these 50 two strokes to get to the workshops and used cooking oil as two stroke oil and never had problems.Only thing was they use to smell like a fish and chip shop going down the road.

Just wondering is diesel price also regulated like petrol?

No its not that is why you get much cheaper sites like Caltex alows, in my region it varies up to R1 a liter depending on which petrol station you go to.

We used to use 2nd hand chip fryer oil as stated above too , but then you need an old skool diesel motor , all you do is filter out particles and run on that, but it smells like a fish n chip shop .

You mean to tell me the adverts are indeed true, that I can do more mileage filling-up at a particular franchise over the other?
More bang for my money so to speak!

No man Tony, it's after I load the mother in law I have such concerns.
Please don't tell me your offshore work is on an oil rig.

nope, I dont work on a rig, but I find Engen fuel seems to make my cars feel slow or underpowered - and thats on my VWs and my waterpumpers.
So yes, fuels are different. It may or may not be the calorific value, it might be the burn speed. But its definitely not my imagination.

Having lived in Brazil for a while and driven a car which could run on ethanol or petrol , I only ever filled up with ethanol once , the performance was down and the car got terrible mileage so was not viable
