Great idea Eben.
I tried to make it a sticky, but I dont think I have the rights to do so.

Re: The Holy Grail found: VWSA paint & upholstery codes
The paint code / trim plate on my '71 1300 Beetle says 06/57, which I assume would be paint/trim. The 06 indicates GOLD according to the table, but the colour of my car is a light green, which I'm sure is the original colour. I've bought the car from the first owner, who attests to have never resprayed the car. On inspecting the car I can also not find any signs of respray. The 57 indicates correctly the BROWN interior. Could GOLD perhaps mean a light yellowish kind of GREEN?

That's exactly what Gold is. I've always called that colour "khaki", but now we know VWSA called it Gold. I guess they could get away with it, since they didn't offer any metallic colours in 1971. My 1971 single cab is painted the same colour, which was quite popular back in the day.73type2 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2017 12:03 pm The paint code / trim plate on my '71 1300 Beetle says 06/57, which I assume would be paint/trim. Thanks Fig. What would be the closest rest-of-the-world colour? At least one can then have paint mixed from a known formula. I'm not talking of when you want repair work to blend in with existing, weathered paint. I suppose you would have to mix with a fuel flap as a sample, for example.

VWSA Gold is not too far off the German 1959-60 colour known as Mango Green. But they're not the same.73type2 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2017 4:03 pm Thanks Fig. What would be the closest rest-of-the-world colour? At least one can then have paint mixed from a known formula. As a child, my uncle had exactly the same beetle - he called it Old Gold - I have also heard it being referred to as Champagne Gold73type2 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2017 12:03 pm The paint code / trim plate on my '71 1300 Beetle says 06/57, which I assume would be paint/trim. The colours work out on the Fleetline as well.
On my Vin plate, there is a small squire plate attached with the left rivit, which has the body colour "03" which is Strato Blue, which is correct with original colour.
On the body of the Vin plate, in the center line, it has One number "67" which is correct for the interior being Light Brown. Being a panel van, it only has one number there, But the buses, normally have 67/67 which is exactly according to the code of interior/panels

Re: The Holy Grail found: VWSA paint & upholstery codes
Is colour matching from a sample the only way to get these colours mixed, or has somebody managed to get paint mixing formulae?

So far, yes. I have met someone who claimed to have the colour mixes for all VWSA paint colours, but he has not yet provided.

What I've posted here is all the tables in the manuals. Some of them had missing pages.

Re: The Holy Grail found: VWSA paint & upholstery codes
Good morning fellow air cooled enthusiasts. I have searched the internet from left to right and the info on this thread is still more comprehensive for SA related paint than anything out there.
Having said that, I cant find a specific code, so I Hope there is some wisdom out there. If you look in these paint and trim cards I found the following metallic paint codes for the later 70s models:
41 Gunmetal
42 Nugget gold
43 Bronze
44 Olive gold
45 Peppermint
46 Electric blue
49 Silver cloud
Anyone out there with knowledge on code 40 used in 77/78. It must be some shade of gold I think.

Re: The Holy Grail found: VWSA paint & upholstery codes
Would anyone know if the VWSA colour codes used on the Audis from that era are the same and are they available. Would really like to know the colour code for my Audi 100 Coupe S.

Re: The Holy Grail found: VWSA paint & upholstery codes
Hubcap, May I please ask that you pm me the VIN tag of your car. The one with the EA number, chassis number and some other numbers on it. I am pretty sure your gold is the same as my gold and I want to verify. My code is 40 and it would be a very unique colour for a SP
