Re: The Holy Grail found: VWSA paint & upholstery codes
Hi All,
Im trying to find the paint code for my Father in law who had a 72 beetle 1600 deluxe. He thinks the paint is nut brown and he has described it as like a milk chocolate colour. I think in his old age he might be getting confused with the interior colour!
Anyone that can help would be great!

Re: The Holy Grail found: VWSA paint & upholstery codes
Welcome here, hope to see more posts and photos' from you.
Brown was a popular colour in the 50's, had a resprayed brown 59 in the past, and not sure what the code was.
You must remember the colours used in RSA was not the same as used else where.
Was the car Ausssie or SA built?
Should you Google Brown VW beetle, you will find a large number of different shades.
I am sure there will be someone able to post the paint code.
How about some photo's of his car, if he still has it.
Herman

The Holy Grail found: VWSA paint & upholstery codes
Hi andymarc. According to my research...which is not very comprehensive btw , there was no brown colour listed in the 72 year when looking at the paint card. Having said that VW's application of their own rules were sometimes different than the spec and in some cases not what we would have thought. It could have been a late 1971 sold in 1972. If that is the case there was a 08-Tan colour listed in 1971. I am not 100% sure how tan looked like but I guess it would be darker than beige but not as dark as chocolate though. Incidentally the colours tan and light beige were both offered in 1970.

Thanks all for replying
He bought it brand new in 72 in Durban.
He is looking to find one in SA and import it here.
The Aussie ones were made of hodge podge parts and never were offered in a 1600. We only got the 1500 here.
Also due to our regulations the seats were different. We didn't get the pop out rear windows either. The list goes on!!!

Re: The Holy Grail found: VWSA paint & upholstery codes
Hi BeetlePower. I think I may have solved this mystery. If you look at the cards under 1971, right at the bottom of the cards, the print code is D30396. When looking at the cards under 1972 the print code is D41017, with the exception of the last card listed under 1972 which also carries the same print code as the 1971 cards. I think in the scanning it got mixed up...a very easy mistake and no offense to you @Fig Also look at the top left corner, the 1971 cards has a screw in pin keeping the cards together and the 1972 cards a little piece of rope, except for the last card. So I think your missing 1971 Beetle card is there under 1972.

Right at the back he found the 1978/9 colour cards, with paint samples and paint codes...quite a find. Refering to the post on the Holy grail of VW paint and upholstery codes, which only goes to 1977, this certainly adds to the holy grail. I personally don't think all the colours were used for Beetles but certainly it applied to all VW at that point in time. Interesting find on this is the mystery code 40 which is Topaz Metallic Gold (see post on my SP) as well as Code 47 which was Copper Metallic, the colour of the last Beetle built in South Africa.

Could you please re-post these Plascon colour charts? I get an error when I click on it.
