Has anyone bought an engine from this advertiser? Experience?

The consensus is that one can't properly rebuild a type1 engine for less than R15k.

piston and cylinder kit R3000
grinding crank and refurbishing rods R2000
Oops, where does he cover his time and addition parts needed to actually take the engine apart, linebore, new oil pump, gaskets, new valves, new guides or resize guides....
its just not possible.
But hey, the beetle is notoriously unreliable isnt it? It must be normal

It all depends on his definition of "recon".

That must be it! I've been re-conned, from car restoration to property deals, but I don't learn. I think I trust too easily.

I have Personally seen a bill from a reputable engineering shop to a very reputable engine builder
for all the engineering done on a stock standard engine with balancing before parts are bought
JUST machining recon heads , linebore ect. and it was almost twice what this guy charges for a whole complete
recon engine I Promise U it is impossible U WILL BE CONNED if U go for that "Deal"

Then I've scored with my motor that was just rebuild

Oom Franz that did the rebuild gave me a new flywheel, crank shaft and barrels he had stacked in a cupboard

The complete motor build cost me R9000 with the engineering works a extra R3780

The most expensive parts was the piston kit @ R2600 included in the R9000

My 1st typr 4 motor before going to Arno at Villiersdorp, was a recon,

The pistons had the holes welded up, the then the new parts...

New rings on the old pistons
New bearings on the uncut crank
New bearings on the conrods, and a new spacer to take up end play.

Motor ran, no oil leaks
No smoking

As always, I do not take it at face value and sent the engine to Villiersdorp.

Thank goodness I had it rebuild the right way

Had years of pleasure out of it now.
