Replacing Distributor - 1976 Baywindow !!

Hi All,

I'm in the process of replacing the distributor on my '76 bus with the original Bosch unit

Is it correct in saying that piston #1 must be at TDC position before removing the current distributor ?

Do I just fit the new distributor the same position or is there any specific way to refit ?

Will my timing be "way" out when refit ?

Howzit,

I would guess to get the rotor to point to #1 it should drop in to the same area as the one you took out, provided you positioned the old disti to # 1 before removing it.
I'm certain timing will need to be reset as the points will be different\out.. Shouldn't be "WAY" out, should be close if set ok, but always worth it to timing light correctly. Also, be sure vac tubes are closed off etc to get timing down right. Tony Z reminded me a few times about this. :-)

What I have done when replacing distributor is to put the engine on TDC number 1 and then check the rotor position. My replacement distributor was 180 degrees out however this was simply changed by removing the key that connects to the distributor drive gear and putting it back on at 180 degrees round.

Align the rotor to as close as the first was and start her up. Check the timing with your light and you are away.

If you look on the top of the distributor where the cap fits you should see a line stamped on the lip that should be No 1 and the rotor should line up with that line.
