1800 golf beetle

Morning all. I need some help with matching a gearbox with a 1800 golf motor. At the moment ive got the big 71 cm diammeter rear wheels and running an ab which as far as i know a 1300 box. Would a 1600 box make any real differance? Or should i get one re geared? I just feel that i dont need it to rev as high as it it... And maybe get the consumption down.
