Hightop Baywindow Full Time Live In Camper

Hello!

After spending the final years of my degree dreaming about buying an old VW Kombi and taking up "vanlife", I started convincing the parents and SO, keeping an eye on vans going up for sale and harrowing banks for money in earnest towards the end of last year. In the beginning of November I happened upon a mid 70's T2 Hightop ( an absolute prerequisite for me being over 6ft 3) with a manageable price to my mind.
After much deliberation with banks and family and other dubious financial sources I managed to scrape together a deposit and secure the beauty into 2018.

Fast forward 3 months and with the difference finally paid, said van is finally in our driveway after father graciously toiled for 10 hours to wrangle my khaki monster from Durban to Johannesburg.

Now the plan is to live in her full time and as such some serious upgrades need to happen not only mechanically (looking at you brakes) but also in the living quarters wrt stove, fridge lighting, bed etc. All which will hopefully happen soon.

Will keep you posted! Any advice, wisdom, hints tips, encouragement or discouragement will be greatly apreciated

Starting off with a query right off the bat
Very curious about history, original colour and upholstery etc but not achieving any success with the online VIN and M plate tools.
Any insights?

Tx!

Well - firstly - congrats on your new high roof china :hangloose: :hangloose: :hangloose: :hangloose: :hangloose: :hangloose:

There is nothing better than hitting the long road in a Kombi 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Your Kombi would originally have been a panel van - the seats would have been a light tan/brown colour, the same with the door cards.
The original colour you will get shortly - probably white though.
It looks like the high roof might have been added at a later stage.

But an important question first - why is your oil light remaining on when you are clearly driving the bus  ?

Your VIN number indicates its a 1975 model.

It was Sunburst yellow with white roof to upper waistline bulge. It had light brown seats with light brown door panels.

Tx for the wishes and info!!
Actually took that picture to send the mechanic at the garage we got it from- came on for a short while, I stopped had a look and a feel and was gone when started again and remained off rest of the way? Fluke maybe? Wiring in front not the best. But wil definitely have it checked out and worked through thoroughly.

Hello fellows!

Been a great few moths with ups and downs of Kombi ownership.

After these earlier post, he spent a few weeks with VDubTech, getting mechanics in ship shape, reupholstered and R&r Bed!
Then off to Kimberley where its my daily drive and house, which i park under a thorntree on a farm outside of town.

Got water pump and solar power installed as wel lto make everthing a bit more comfortable.

Had some lovely trips in and around the Northern Cape and the Free State and one long haul from Kimberley to the Drakensberg for a great holiday.
Seredipitously camped at the same camping ground as a Kombi Get together and had the pleasure of meeting a few fellow owners!
Thanks for the help and advice Mark(c)?

Then disaster struck and Im without wheels and home.
According to local specialist, the tapered front end of the crank has worn down and out and as such isnt capable of turning the alternator etc anymore.
Apparently the taper cant be properly machined anymore so crank has to be replaced??
So Im in serious need of a crank and if anybody can help point me in the right direction or has some advice, it will greatly be appreciated.

Best identify the crank you need first.

1700, 1800 or 2L?

I met you at the camp site outside of Bloem the other day.

Your engine had an AP engine number which is 1800, but that can’t guarantee what is inside. Any previous guy could have swapped it for a 2l as well.

Hmmm. That looks suspiciously like a Fleetline VIN plate ...
