Pampoen
A few years ago I bought myself (Thanks Jaco) a green 411 square that had been in a shed in the Freestate since 1982.
The body was nearly perfect, with almost no dings, no rust and only needed a polish to restore it to its former glory. Even the window rubbers were still soft.
Unfortunately, there was no engine and no gearbox and it was originally an automatic.
I had numerous thoughts for it, but it had to join the queue in my garage.
Then a while later I found a black 411 fastback which was going to serve as a donor vehicle for the gearbox and the few pieces I needed to complete the project.
Fast forward a few years and I get a call from Gerhard at the Volksie Museum in Bloem.
https://www.facebook.com/VolksiemuseumGerhard/
I've been nagging him for his orange 411 square since I first saw it and after a few years worth of nagging and annoyance he phones me and asks if I still want the car.
coincidentally, he phoned me on my 40th birthday.
Uhm... cant afford it right now, but I do want it.
Now I'd had someone else nagging me for my cars for a couple of years... so a quick call, two cars sold and now I can afford the one in bloem. And before anyone asks, I did have to throw in my own money too, I just couldnt afford to buy it without selling the others.
Others gone (they were collected a week after being sold).
and then Pampoen arrived
1971 411 Manual with factory fuel injection.
As soon as my wife saw it, she called it Pampoen - and I think the name suits it

Re: Pampoen
For those who noticed, it is a LHD car.
The story I was given is that it originally belonged to the South African ambassador to Portugal. By the time it got to Portugal, he'd already been transferred to Namibia, so it got onto another ship and headed to our part of the world.
Its also going to be a bit odd driving a LHD on the left.
@Pine sent me a photo of it from 2001 with his 412 at the time...

Very nice looking car Tony and nice colour too
Always a good feeling to find out your car has a bit of special history behind it.

Re: Pampoen
Congrats on your new ride Tony.
I'm sure you know what I'm going to ask. Do you plan to modify this car?
Trust me, I really hate these things. I think they are the ugliest cars ever made, maybe the Type 3 is worse, but this seems like a really nice original example to preserve?

@Sean
For now, there are no plans to do anything other than fix the few small issues.
The thought has crossed my mind of putting the EMPI 8's back on it like it had in Pines picture but for now, nothing is happening.
I've always harboured the idea of putting Porsche Twists onto a squareback - and this idea goes back to the 90's, but I dont think it'll suit an orange car

Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.

Re: Pampoen
What a silly thing to say Type 3s are by far the best looking VWs out there
You can never have enough Garages

Re: Pampoen
The Type 3 is the best ride, best shape, best ergonomically designed best power plant, and all round excellent VW ever made.
And best of all, the FASTBACK.....
Nice one Tony, Love the colour and the car condition, well done, and hope you only have joy with it.
Never had a feeling for the type 4 but the engine, but thats only me... hell man, I don't even like the Karmann Ghia
