6V VOLTAGE REGULATOR

Post by Jack Nel » Mon Jul 02, 2018 8:03 pm

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, since it is not aircooled VW related, but I'm sure I can get some good advice from the clever people on this forum.

I have a weakness for old Japanese scrambler motorbikes and I've collected and restored a few over the years. I've run into a problem on two of my Honda XL 500 motorbikes.

The headlight and tail lights on these bikes are being powered from the magneto directly, and some of these bikes just suddenly start generating way more current than 6v from the megneto. See the link below which gives a bit more info:

https://parduebrothers.com/product/hond ... regulator/

Basically it says:"'For an unknown reason some Hondas begin producing excess headlight Voltage with age. The problem is in the stator. Its a mystery exactly why, even after unwinding several stators. This can happen on bikes that have been OK, and some bikes were shipped this way. Even with a viable battery and all bulbs intact, headlight Voltage is too high"'

I'' ve made contact with Pardue brothers several times to try and get him to send me one of his voltage regulators, but I'm getting no joy from them, and I've searched the web to find someone else who can supply me with voltage regulators, but can't find anything.

Does anybody here have the knowledge to design someone like this?

Thanks

Here you go jack

http://www.velocity-rc.com/cgi-bin/vrc/ ... how&pid=27

Or maybe, but you need to ask the supplier if it will work.

https://www.newfrog.com/product/dc-12-2 ... gLSqPD_BwE

It takes 12 v and brings it back to 6 v, should work with anything over 6 volt I am sure or here is a crude circuit you can try your self.
Just get the transistor to carry the amps you need

Thanksd Herman, I've seen the second option you suggested (https://www.newfrog.com/product/dc-12-2 ... gLSqPD_BwE) being advertised locally.

Do you think it will work for my application, as the bike picks up revs, it increases the output to the lights and I've measured up to 28volts....

It should cut any input down to 6 volt but not sure at what input voltage it will start working.

Would imagine it would start at 6 v as the out put will be equal.

Jack the bike shops use to sell a condenser that you put in line.Fullthrottle have closed down but you can try Startline here they should be in Natal as the owner lives there.I need 2 for my SR 500s. try looking up on junkmail or gumtree.
