This is going to be argued...

Points replacement? No. In our experience, they are not reliable. If I have to carry a spare set of points and/or a distributor, that is not indicative of reliability.

Full electronic replacement? Yes. I run a custom WBX setup on one of my vehicles. I'm approaching a decade of faultless operation, with a setup that was fully rebuilt and installed with care. Another one of mine runs a very fancy, programmable electronic distributor, that has been equally reliable.

My oldies run rebuilt original distributors. They are regularly serviced and are not daily drivers, so I'm not too fussed about them.

Have found heat to be a killer.

The curves of the fixed aftermarket or Golf units I have found not quit correct for the aircooled.

My feeling is if you get the programmable unit that is not mounted on the motor it self, you will have a better system.

Other than that I have found regular service, keeping the old condenser till it breaks, and keeping an thin emery board in the car is the best option.

I have an Äircooled Parts Bag"that I move to the car being used, and in that I have a new set of points, an condenser that I know works, and a full spare distributor, that I can plug in within 10 minutes and be on my way. It also has other parts.

I have taken tippex and marker the dizzy shaft at the right timing point, as well as the spare, so all you do is remove the cap, take out old dizzy, put in new one on the mark, refit cap and start and ride.

Yes if it has no resistor on the field coil, but best you buy a Bosch blue coil that is correct for aircooled motor.
