Beetle Speedometer Needle

Hi All
I just completed restoring my speedometer that was making a hell of a racket due to all the grime and dry grease in it and I decided to reset the mileage to zero same time.
Just wanted to know how to refit the speedometer needle to get the correct speed.
Do I need to have some slight tension on the coil spring when pressing the needle back on?
Would hate to assemble the whole lot and find the speedo is way out.
