Hello, I am asking what the best brand of front brake disk pads is for a 76 T2 kombi?

And where do I source them in Johannesburg?

The last pads I had squeaked fairly bad but lasted long.

I've always used ATE as they were the manufactures of the brake components used on the VW's.

ATE are kinder on the discs and Ferodo brake last longer but eat the discs up quite quick as they are a harder pad but its all up to you.

I could not find ATE so got Ferodo. They squeak something terrible.

Any ideas on how to get rid of brake squeak?

a bit of copper or nickel slip on the slide lip edges of the pads

You can even smooth the slide edges on the pad with sandpaper before fitting with paste.

Thanks Herman. Brakes are put today so I can try to fix this however, after searching YouTube I have noticed that I do not have the retaining spring plate nor the anti squeal thin plate. These I presume have been lost over the life of the car.

Is this critical for the functioning of the brakes. They have been like this for a good few tens of thousands of kms with no issues.

The pads can't come out since they have the retaining rods and clips. But maybe that is why they squeal. Also no anti squeal plates I presume is also why they squeal. :-)

Where can I source these things?

I use to put a thin coat of silicone sealer on the back of the pads.I would suggest all of the above you should skim the discs when putting new pads as the new pads have to bed into all the grooves made by the old pads. Get some rough sand paper and take the glaze of the disks and see what happens. But tread lightly on the pedal for maybe 10kms or so.

If you go to your Brake & Clutch guy, you can ask him to order a spring plate and new pins kit, from the pad supplier,

They do not have the anti sequel plates as these used to come with the pads as a kit, but most cars do not use them anymore.

If you find a supplier for them, let everybody know as most will like to re-fit them.

Well sanding a 45 degree angle and some silicone did not work. I have one of the loudest set of brakes in JHB now. I don't need a hooter. :-)

Maybe they will quiet down a bit once seated properly. They never used to squeak so here is hoping.

Thats why its best to skim the discs then the pads are working on a flat surface and not on high spots, best you just keep applying the brakes lightly until they get worn in on the old surface. Good luck.

Have you followed a bedding-in process?
You can read up on it on Power Brake’s website.

If you’ve done that and it still squeals and the surfaces are flush then brake the wit waks out of them... well maybe not like a race driver but you must get heat into the pads and it needs to deposit a layer onto the disks.

I went to the Kruger over New Years so have now done some fair mileage and braking.

Still one of the worst squeal I have ever heard. People are screaming at me in parking garages. :-)

I will take them apart one side at a time to see what can be done otherwise next thing is to purchase a new set of pads and see if that may have been the problem.

Get some rough sand paper and sand the glaze off do the same to the pads then bed them in by applying the brake lightly for 10 kms with lots of stop and goes. Its the glaze that causes the squeak and make sure the wheels turn free and not binding, check the thickness of the discs I cant remember the wear limit but about 12mm ? remember if the discs are badly scored they take a long time to bed in.
