My 1971 Deluxe

Here is another edition to the collection that I got hold of last week.

It is a 1971 model, colour code 060, which is referred to as Gold.

It lived in Bellville from brand new and still has its original number plates. It is 100% rust free and in original paint with the odd touch up here and there.

There is one drawback. It was converted to a JT3000 V6.
The conversion was done in 1987 in order to tow the old mans caravan. It has quite a heavy duty constructed towbar fitted. Surprisingly, there doesn't appear to be any overheating. I'm not going to gut out this engine just yet, Ill drive it as is for a while. It was a new motor from Ford fitted, and it doesn't even have 50 000 km on it. It still has its own warranty books as well.

Now, I will admit, I hate conversions, but this V6 does have some good power, enough to easily make it run off the speedo.

No no, I most certainly am not encouraging such work. I still hate conversions.

But I will admit, it is rather impressive when it starts going over 160km/h. . It will go faster, but eish, its quite scary.

It’s brakes are surprisingly good. It’s a 1971 model, which I know as standard to have disk brakes upfront, but no booster. This bus does have a booster which is odd. It doesn’t appear to be fitted later either. All seems perfectly original down to every hose fitting, brake balancer etc, but it’s not the same as a usual late model either, it is something unique. I wonder if a booster wasn’t an optional extra back then?

Maybe 71 only had boosters on the de luxe but not on some of the basic versions?

What i remember about discs/ booster setup on later baywindows. (72 + later):
The more expensive versions of kombis, de luxes, (up to 74), executives, (75 and later), all had discs, boosters, and type 4 engines. Basic type 1 versions remained boosterless.

Panelvans since 72 were optionally available with type 4 engines and then also had brake boosters. But unlike kombi versions, no hot-air booster fan for interior.

Basic type 1- engined panelvans of same years had discs but no booster.

Singlecabs and doublecabs up to 76 were only available with type 1 engine, no booster.
(Saw one 72 singlecab with a type 4 1700 engine, but that type 4 could have been retro-fitted.) From the 77 year the single and doublecabs were only available with type 4 engine. Discs, no booster. These were the only type 4 engined bays without brake booster. Think SA was the only country which had type 4- engined single/doublecabs. The ckd kits for these which arrived from Germany probably had the boosterless front suspension beam.
For the 79 year to early 80, some unusual combinations appeared. Like that was the only time some type 1-engined kombis came with sliding side windows. Maybe they were clearing out some stock being "end of line" for the baywindow.

Brasilias 76 onwards i think had front drum brakes and boosters.

By the way, bodywork/interior looks very nice, really well looked after/kept out of the rain" de luxe.

That is interesting information Dawie. This is certainly the first 71 I’ve seen with a booster. I have another 71 Deluxe and it doesn’t have a booster.

It’s resovior is also situated behind the drivers seat. Not in the usual spot below the dash on early bays or in the wheel arch cavity on later bays.

I have noticed further differences on this bus compared to other 71’s. I’ll share/ask a little later .
