Aircooled VW South Africa

After years of looking, hoping and crying, a few months ago, the VW Fairy(almost like the Tooth Fairy, just fatter ) called me and offered me a mint 1967 Squareback, with all the extras It's running like a Swiss clock he told me...brakes are like ABS(Almost Bloody Solid)
Then came lockdown and repatriation but eventually, I could collect the car, guess beginning of June....round about there. Had to pull it out from under a hedge with a forklift and lifted it onto the trailer as it would not move ....but still a thing of beauty I tell you.


The idea was to keep it stock and just to "manage" the rust but it turned out a bit worse than originally anticipated.









I guess it's a bit like going to bed with the neighbor's daughter but waking up next to his wife...yuk
I really did not want to repaint the car but decided it was better to properly treat the rust, than to let it go up to a stage where major reconstruction was needed. I'm glad we did....after yanking off her panties, it revealed some real nasties.










So off to my paint dude. I instructed him to mask off the interior and only exterior. I am really out of space so was just to glad when he told me he could take her in "next week". Lockdown was bad for everybody but in particular one owner enterprises. He was just to glad to get going. "How long do you reckon?" I asked him..."ah...I would say 3 to 4 weeks" he responded. Great, I knew I had some space for at least 4 months

Ok, then I got busy and he never took pictures but this is where we are now. I should get her back by next week Friday.









I will need some parts soon but will ask you guys when we get there.

Good to have another type 3 on this here forum.

Got me thinking of my white Squareback that carried my whole house when I built it.

When the house was finished the Squareback was also finished, and as the house used up all the cash, the car had to go.

So maybe it was the same one, who will know....

For those who dont know Eugene... he tends to over exaggerate things from time to time. Sometimes for the better, but sometimes one has to wonder where his mind is going...

Eugene first bitched at me for selling the project 411 square to someone else - not that he told me he wanted it. But anyway, thats history and he warned me about what might happen if I sell the T3 and dont contact him first. So, I contacted Eugene first and the rest is history.

The hedge and forklift... there does his mind.
It was inside my workshop and I pushed it outside for us to load onto the rental trailer.

As for the history of the car.
I bought it from someone on this forum a few years ago who was wanting to modify it into a slammed beach cruiser with a surfboard on the roof, and drive it around Gauteng like this. So it made its way to the Cape. Thanks again to Jaco for the help with this one.
I drove it the 100m from where the truck dropped it off into the workshop and parked it, removed the battery and that is where it stood for about 4 years before it moved onto Eugene. That was the one and only time I drove it. And yes, I did tell Eugene that the brakes were tight.

I AM LOOKING FOR THAT EXACT ONE MYSELF (BUT A CHEAPYONE OR TWO HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE BUT NORMALLY TOO FAR AWAY AND SO WITH THE TRANSPORT COST ABOVE THE VEHICLE COST THEY'VE ALL BEEN OUT OF REACH FOR ME.

Today I collected the "finished" product. Not finished finished, just finished painted
Quite happy with the result. Color is spot on and just the correct amount of shine. now I need your help with beadings etc
